Thought you all would appreciate this nice video Keith Merrow put together in order to compare 12 models of Seymour Duncan pickups. It's a metal rhythm clip, and I think the differences are pretty clear!

I think the Distortion is my favorite, what do you guys think?

Take a listen:

Phenomenal comparison video. Wow. Thanks so much for posting. I've been using a SH5 Custom for a while now, and I can't believe how "polite" it sounds compared to some of the others.

wow, huge differences, i like the 59/custom hybrid and the Distortion.

I can hear that mid spike in the JB like crazy

Cool video. It further confirms that I can't stand the way Alnico 8 magnets sound. I thought for that style of music the Distortion sounded very good, but I also though the good old JB sounded really good as well. I'm quite happy with the Custom that I have in my Les Paul.

Wow, Great comparison!!! I liked the distortion but the standout for me was the Gus G Fire Blackout...

One thing I would like to know is what characteristics does this guitar have? Is it bright, dark, or fairly balanced? Since it's a baritone it kinda throws off what these would sound like in a 25.5" guitar tuned straight up.

Kieth is very clear when he points out in the vid description that this is what these pickups will sound like with this amp and guitar, and will not sound the same in a different guitar.

Wow great clip! Awesome tight playing and riffing that never got old.

Distortion and custom 59 hybrid stood out for me. Alt 8 seemed hollow missing some beef. JB seemed constrained but still the clutch go to pickup because you know what you'll get. Custom was "soft" for me (can see it working now in bright ass guitar), dimebucker HORRIBLE. Honourable mention to the invader.

Nice to hear a well recorded metal pickup comparison. I liked the '59/ custom the best had a cool vowel quality. Also the jb...

distortion

custom

gus g

for me!

time to put my custom 5 in a guitar i guess.

The JB was a little scooped

Really impressed with the Gus G. It has the full warm lows, in your face mids and very present but nice non harsh sounding highs.

Major props to Keith Marrow for installing each pup into the same guitar. Pup comparisons using different guitars (even between same models) are utterly useless IMO. The way I see it, a pup is just a filter that hears string vibration dictated by playing technique and wood/construction of the guitar, analogous to different sounding microphones on the same singer.

Distortion for warm sounding guitars

Invader for bright sounding guitars

The Distortion was great. Really impressed by the balance and clarity of the 59/Custom hybrid. Boy, does that JB honk...

Interesting. I have a Distortion, Invader, and Blackout installed in different guitars and I can say this is pretty accurate.

I have been curious about the Custom, and from this video I would say it is not much different. It is hard to pick a favorite, but worst is easily the Dimebucker, JB, and Blackout Metal....

this is in NO WAY what a duncan custom, JB, distortion, or AHB2 sounds like in a LP type guitar with mahogany body, maple cap and rosewood board. i've tried all of those in mine....they all sound great....

great video though. it definitely lets you see the flavors each pickup can impart to the sounds.
as said b4, you have to keep in mind, these shootouts are very guitar dependant.

my faves in this guitar are the dimebucker, the gus G and the distortion.
