I have an EL34 head and on the back near the footswitch jacks there are two 1/4" jacks that read "boost amp" input and output. What are they for?

This is for the Effects loop.

If it's an older shiva, the effects loop level is CRAZY hot.

You need to build yourself a special "Signal ducking" cable. (It's a combination of resistors wired into the plug of a cable which will bring the level down to pedal, or rack, level. See instructions here: http://www.bogneramplification.com/customshop/ShivaLoopConstruct.php

Then, instead of plugging back into the RETURN jack, plug into the BOOST AMP IN, then run a cable from BOOST AMP OUT into the RETURN.

I think it's a 2006 model so it should have the updated loop. I've run a DD-6 through the loop for delay and it sounds great. I had a Soldano that had a crazy hot loop as well and no pedals at all would work without sounding terrible.
