I've been here a few times mostly through search engine results but discovered the Friedman board last night. I've been playing for about 20 years and last year I finally spent some money on a nice amp. I've been an AIC fan since the 90's and I preordered a JJ one or two days after stumbling onto Mark Day's demo video on Youtube. Until last spring I hadn't played all that much over the last 6-8 years and I came out of a $200 Rogue Tuberider with a home made cabinet. I think I can get used to this high end stuff! I'm envious of you guys that posted pictures of the signed heads here, I wish I could have gotten a hold of one of them. After all these years I'm still hunting the elusive Jerry autograph!

The Jerry G&L I picked up last March or April. When my old chorus pedal went belly up I decided to pick up the Smart Gate and 10 band EQ that Jerry currently uses to go along with the new Boss CE-5. I wouldn't mind having the Cantrell Crybaby but I have a 535Q which sounds amazing with this amp so I probably won't be replacing it.

A couple of questions for Dave or anybody else that's played/owned the Friedman stuff. I'm doing some home recording and wouldn't mind cutting down or eliminating the amp's natural hiss. The Smart Gate does a good job of killing the noise from the effects chain, it's just the amp's natural hiss I'm after. I was considering a Rocktron Hush in the loop:

...but I'm not going to compromise tone to use it. I see mixed reviews for this, some people saying it will kill your tone and some people saying it doesn't alter it at all. I tried chatting with Musician's Friend and they weren't that helpful. Has anybody here had experience with this unit, especially on a Friedman amp?

My other question was about an attenuator. I'm playing in my house, in a subdivision, and I have a three year old and a six month old baby. I can't use much volume and I'm usually around 2-3 on the master and individual channel volumes. I'm blown away by the JJ's ability to play whisper quiet and sound amazing at volumes most big amps wouldn't even work at, but I know most tube amps sound better when they're working hard. Would an attenuator be a good investment or is it unnecessary with a Friedman amp? If it's a good idea, does anybody have a recommendation on a cheapish one that again won't kill my tone?

Thanks guys!

Congrats! ive got a Reload (a really nice attenuator) and i dont feel the need to use it with the Friedmans!

arent the signed ones still available?

They may still be out there but I didn't realize when I preordered mine that some would be available signed.

There is a signed jj with the added 2nd master for the Cantrell mode on the gear page now.

If you're considering an attenuater, go with the Fryette Power Station. Its by far the best on the market.

Thanks for the suggestion on the attenuator. I'm still undecided on whether I'll pick one up or not. I don't seem to have self control so I'll probably have one before long.

I decided to go ahead and order the Super C last night and will report back on it next weekend.

Been gassing for a Cantrell myself.
Glad you're back on the horse, to hell with everyone else, Rock It!!!!!

Man, I just started a post about an attenuator because the same reasons your posting. Guess I'll see if anyones using one in the forum.

ive had several and thought it couldnt get any better than the Reload.

then i got a fryette PS after rob at tone merchants confirmed what i was hearing everywhere else - its by far the best sounding and feeling attenuator ive ever used.

ive said it before though too - the friedman MV's are phenomenal

The Super C is a decent piece for the price. It will remove pretty much all the amp's hiss when not playing. I didn't think I'd use the gate but it works well and I'm using it also. No unintended chop. The only real noise I got was with the master and channel volumes all the way up without playing and it was very faint buzz, most likely from the effects chain.

When turning the Hush on and off there is a noticeable difference at first but it's mostly a small volume increase, very little change in tone. I'm happy with it.

The last hole in the rack will be a Power Station with a rack mount kit and it'll get a cooling fan kit. Poor Epiphone amp blew up and has been relegated to rack stand duty.

I saw they had a rack mount kit coming for it but I didn't consider height until you mentioned it. It's 2.75" tall so it will fit within two spaces but I only have one space left.
