I've been putting those little packs of silica gel you get in Dunlop strings in my guitar case in the hope of keeping my strings and hardware fresher longer seeing as the idea is they pick up all the moisture that could cause rust.

Think there's anything in this theory, or does anyone else do this?

Those postage stamp sized ones? Having one or two in your case won't hurt anything. But it won't do much either.

MANY guitars (Fender for example) come with one in the case that is about 3"x3" and chock full of silica gel.

You won't dry out a guitar with a small amount of dessicant.

I recall reading something that once they absorb moisture they're pretty much useless so I don't see them doing much of anything. Maybe if you bought new ones and stuck them in the case. Might want to invest in a proper guitar case dehumidifier/humidifier with a meter if you're worried.
