SLO Clones ?

I have both the SLO and a QuickRod. Both great amps. For the money, you cannot beat a Splawn. I still love mine and I have played it for years now. Great amps. The SLO cranked up is a religious experience. I wouldn't say they are similar. Two different types of awesome tone. The Splawn is heavy Marshall flavor and the Soldano is completely its own thing. Can't go wrong with either

I think the prices on the used market for Hot Rods and Avengers are too good to really justify buying a clone amp. They're not SLO's, but they are excellent amps-some people prefer them. Plus, that way you don't have to worry about workmanship either. Some of those people building clone amps might not know what they're doing.

Much tonal difference between the SLO and HR ?

It definitely sounds more like the SLO than 5150/6505's though, haha.

Even though i agree with you this comparison surprised me?

That's the video that gave me pause before I bought an SLO, and that's also the video that proves YouTube is a shit way of judging amp tone. No offense to Sgt Thump who was a RT member..and anyone else. But I've played 6505s/5150s and the only thing they have in common are names on the eq dials. Once you play an SLO you'll know. Until then trust us. There's only one. For that tone. Its right up there with the best...a great Marshall, 2C+, Wizard, Diezels, Bogners....etc.

I've watched that video many times over the years when I was considering the SLO and every time I watch it, I am baffled because it is to damm close to each other to justify the $$$.

BUT, I am sure the feeling, response in the two amps are different. I will have to search and see if any are in the NY area for me to test drive.

Anyone compared the HR25 to the SLO?

I have long considered building an SLO, but haven't gotten to it yet.

I've owned an SLO and have played the HR25 multiple times. My SLO was epic in tone, loved it, pretty stupid selling it...but the HR25 is KILLER. It isn't an SLO, but it does WHAT it does so very well. GREAT loop. Clean is very good when set right (or conversely a great crunch). Better than other HotRods gain IMHO.

Not an SLO, but a really cool amp.

I think the HR25 is closer to SLO than the rest of the Hot Rod series. But like Rdodson said, not an SLO. Great amp though!

That's the only way. On YouTube they can be eq'd similarly and you think they are equal. But it's not just feel..the tone is just worlds better imo. It's something you have to experience.

I realize the clip makes them sound similar. I thought that as well. Playing them in person is totally different. I have tried many 5150's including the current ones and I feel the real SLO is worth the extra money. It really is that much better. You truly have to play one at volume to understand. No youtube compression etc. Honestly Reza's video seems to capture the SLO tone better than most. It at least gives you a close estimate to what you can expect. Once you crank it up and have that feel as if the string is hooked directly to amp. It's crazy good for solos. The ultimate lead amp

That's it exactly. The SLO has this feel and response that is incredible and mesmerizing.

Similar ballpark but obviously not exactly the same. But there's no guarantee that a random kit clone would sound any closer.

It definitely sounds more like the SLO than 5150/6505's though, haha.

I made an A/B video a while ago:

That was an okay bass demo. Any out there with guitar? :D

A buddy of mine bought an SLO and it was THE BIGGEST tone dissapointment to me of all time. He ended up selling it after less than a year and never regretted the decision. I've played the HR series amps too (including the +s) and felt they were all lacking...my .02.

I've owned 2 Splawns too...cold solder joint machines, YMMV.

I might be willing to sell my SLO Clone. I don't really use it. Sounds good, but I just built it for fun, not to really use as an amp. Sounds identical to a real SLO. I've A/Bd them side by side. But the SLO isn't really my cup o' tea.

I agree. The Hot Rod 25 is really killer. Definitely has a different character than the other Hot Rods. Maybe not completely SLO but pretty damn close IMO.
