1. What brand of tubes do you prefer in the pre amp as well as the power section?

2. What speaker and cab combination do you like best?

Mine came with Groove Tubes 6L6's and who knows what in the pre amp slots. I'm running mine through an old Marshall 1960A with G12T-75's. I'm also using an MXR GT-OD in the front of it. Crunch channel with the gain dimed and the pedal on for rhythm. I switch to the second channel for solos and have the gain around 4.5 with the pedal on. It sounds good....but I'm wondering if it wouldn't sound better somehow if I did something different.

I have a Bogner 4x12 with V30s and a Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks. Let me know if u want to try them with your SLO

That'd be great. I tried my old Bogner 4x12 loaded with V30's and didn't really care for it. Seemed harsh on the high end. It wasn't used much at all so it could be that the speakers weren't broken in yet. Also tried it through a Soldano 4x12. Better than the Bogner, but not as good as the Marshall.

I grabbed a matched quad of Sovtek WGC 6L6s with the wafer bottoms..they sound great to me. Tried KT66s but the 6L6s tone was more aggressive. I biased it at 30ma..I got a lot of info on the Soldano forum. Just reading up on SLO posts. I have a ton of pres to roll and I like used but still strong amperex and Chinese Bs..just try them in different positions. The Speakers that I love with every amp are old school G12 65s..I have an '80 and an '83 marshall cab with those. Sounds killer with the SLO, JCM 800..I also like my EVH cab with the SLO as well but my V30 cab not so much.

I have a bogner v 30 cab. My slo is biased at 35 ma but with that cab try the treble at 2 and pres at 6 for the high end. My mids are at 4 or 5 depends on the guitar and bass at 6. Also I took the batting out of the back which lets it breath more (at least to me).

THis is pretty much identical to how I run mine.
(Normal channel boosted for rythmn, and Overdrive channel for Leads)
I mainly run like this in order to get a solo Volume boost, as the effects loop is a POS

Make sure what ever tube you try can work with he SLO's high plate Voltage

The Stock Sovtek's are the ideal match for the SLO

Stock OEM Sovtek 5881 wafer bottom tubes biased at 30ma because they are built to outlast a nuclear war .
For classic RNR tones i prefer the G12M Greenbacks , for modern or balanced tones i like the EVM12L's .
Can not stand the overpriced Soldano cabinets or Eminence speakers they sell .

I set mine up with everything on the lead channel..gain 6.5, presence maxed, treble 1-3 depending on the room, mids 5-6, bass 8-10. A little bright but with the 65s it sounds good to me. I also boost it a little with an eq pedal, mid and level bump. Sounds amazing...modded Marshall-ish to me. Back the highs and mids down and it's modern. I might have to try the crunch channel boosted though...I do like the crunch for a dirty blues thing.

I'm looking for a EQ pedal to do the same kind of thing , to get more of that mid high Marshall midrange bark .
Which EQ pedal do you use ?
I'm looking at the MXR RI 6 band EQ pedal , still on the fence though as to which one .
Have you used it in the loop to see how it effects the tone differently than up front ?

Don't laugh but the best EQ pedal I've tried is the cheap Danelectro Fish n Chips for like 25 bucks. More transparent than the Boss or MXR..and the MXR is noisy to me. The switch tends to go on these but they're cheap enough so I just buy 2 new ones every once in a while. Plus the sliders are a more gradual taper than the others so you can be more subtle with your changes. I use this pedal with everything I boost..Jubilee, stock 800s, etc. Try one..!

I remember seeing a thread where the Soldano guy (not Mike, another) said the best tubes were the stock Sovtek 5881, JJ 6L6 was also a good match
He said the recommended bias was between 22-25 mA, which is how they set it at factory

As far as settings, yeah, high bass, lower treble and presence, and a good bit of gain

Forgot to mention that I haven't put anything in the loop since I first tried it out...changes the tone too much for me. Just using the eq for a boost in front.

I ran a Yamaha FX 500 in my loop for a touch of verb and delay. Wasn't too bad. Soon as I get some free time I'm gonna roll tubes in the pre amp and swap out the Groove Tubes. Always hated those things.
I've gotten to run it pretty wide open. Played an outdoor gig and had the normal channel volume at about 5 and the OD channel about 5.5ish.

Thanks Racerxrated !
Anytime! Rigtalk is a great place to learn about gear..glad to share my limited experiences so far...

Preamps = JJ's in V1, Sovtek LP (not LPS) in V2 - V5.
Power tubes = Sovtek 5881/6L6WGC "wafer bottoms" biased 26-29 ma.
Speakers = Stock Eminence Legends.... and Celestion 75's & 65's in some situations

The above tube combination is what I've come up with after many hours of tube swapping and playing. I feel these are the BEST sounding for balancing out both channels and is also, pretty much, what Soldano ships the SLO with over the past 5 years.

Speaker wise, I really liked the G12M and V30s (at least in a Bogner cab). T75s weren't bad but were very "metal," which might be just what some are wanting, I guess.

Would this apply to an Avenger too? I have a Hot Rod Avenger and need some new power tubes. Could you explain "Wafer Bottoms" for a newb like me?

They have thin plastic bases that are notched? If you go to any tube retailer website just look at the pictures of the Sovtek 6L6s and you will spot them.
