Whenever I audition my mics for a project, the SM57 is always under the SM58, which in turn usually comes in under a Heil PR20. The 57 will get the job done, but it is really nasal. 57 might work for a really aggressive vocal or if the mix is thick with other parts flying around. The 58 is better for most vocals, but it's a toss up usually between whether we like the 58 or PR20 better. Different tastes, different projects.
I think there are folks out there who'se voice would work with a 57, but I think there are better choices out there for most vocal stuff
If I already had it, I'd try it
If I had to go buy a mike, I'd pick something else
yeah i agree, i may end up giving it a whirl, i mean i am going to layer the track a few times so it should be decently thick. But we'll see what happens
Depends on you're budget but I never use sm57's on vocals. Save up for an SM7B, great all around mic that works great on most vocalists too. I also pefer the Heil PR20 over the sm57, 2nd that suggestion in that price range.
it can work great on certain vocal ranges. Especially if the vocalist needs to be a bit more clear in the mix. It has a honky or nasal sounding mid range bump. So generally it isn't a "go to" if you have some nice sounding condensers. But you can get a great sound or even a cool vocal effect type situation, depending what your going for.
If you are just looking to get a mic, because you don't have one and looking at price range. SM58 would generally be a better choice (its the epitome "live" vocal mic) The Heil PR20 i have never used, but i heard a bunch of people (like the posts above me) like it a lot as well.
If you go into GC or sam ash or something, a lot of times they will let you plug one into their recording setups quick, and A/B a few different choices. Pick the one that sounds best for you.
