Have my first band practice and gig coming up with my Smallbox combo.

Any tips / tricks for rolling back the guitars volume, but yet getting a pretty loud clean?
Have a few songs where I need a good loud clean then a nice crunch which the plexi channel will give me is spades.
No way do I want to dial back the gain on the plexi channel it just sounds too good!

I've always played a clean channel and got my crunch from a pedal in the past. Something I no longer need or want to do. This amp sounds so great on its own.

Thanks

I find it helps if you have the volume up quite a bit. It also helps if your using single coils or have a 3 way or 5 way switch to split humbuckers.

If I want truly "clean" cleans I drop the gain down to 5 or 6 on the Plexi channel and hit it with a clean boost like a Timmy for my crunch. That works better for me than maxing the gain and trying to roll my volume back.

I use a Mad Professor Evolution Orange Underdrive pedal for this. Its specifically designed to cut gain. It works great with my Smallbox. I keep the plexi channel gain up around 3 oclock to max, then hit the pedal for cleaner tones. It has bass, mids and treble controls to dial back any tone loss that you might get by rolling back the guitar volume.
Its also good on the BE channel. I can keep the gain high on the amp, and hit the Underdrive for a mid-gain tone.

This sounds great. Too bad I'm on a buying freeze right now.

I'm still struggling with the whole volume knob thing since I've always just stomped in the past. Hopefully I'll get up to speed soon!

Throw a nice volume pedal in the loop. Pull it back when your in crunch mode. Roll back your guitar volume for clean and use the volume pedal in the loop for a volume boost.

Funny , I fell into figuring this out last night.
Not with a volume pedal but with a boost pedal in the loop.
Worked great! I got the loud clean I was looking for without loosing anything on my gain channels

Nice. I use a compressor in the loop too. If you have a nicer one, that's a parallel comp or has a blend knob the work great too. I use a barber tone press.

What's the compressor in the loop do for you?
Same as what I was looking for a louder clean?
Just curious
Thanks

The subject of this thread sounds like something you'd do in the shower.

Wow, just googled the Mad Professor Evolution Orange Underdrive... I might be able to use this with my pink taco. Great tip!

Yes louder cleans for the most part. It's a volume/fat boost. I blend just a little bit a compression in. I like it on the BE channel too.
You can use it as a cut as well.
