I have a open back 1x12 cabinet and want a versatile speaker for overdriven and clean tones, but simultaneously smooth and mid-present. It will be paired with a Bad Cat Hot Cat 50w with EL34s. It currently has a standard Vintage 30, not the Bad Cat version V30, which I’m not a fan of alone. I tried a G12H30, and it doesn’t compliment the amp. The Hot Cat does well with a decent mid-push with my particular guitars, which are mostly lower output single coils. The Hot Cat also has enormous low-end. I have the bass knob around 8 o’clock with the Vintage 30, so maybe a speaker that’s tight in the bass.

Jim at Scumback suggested his J75 speaker, when I was expecting the M75. It’s demos sound great, and reading reviews online seems like it’s popular for open-back 1x12s, and fairly balanced. I’m curious about other suggestions though. I was looking at either the G12M Creamback or Lynchback as well. If I’m not sold on anything else by Friday I’ll order the J75. Jim also has a lenient return policy with speakers if I decide the J75 is too much and want the smoother M75 or something instead.

So tell me what speaker to get. This is my first 1x12 cabinet ever.

I recently put a Creamback H75 in my archon combo, and it is awesome!!! I have had a lot of 112s and always find larger magnet speakers sound best in them.

eminence wheelhouse. i helped them develop this speaker specifically to make open back combos sound full and smooth. lots of headroom, no shrill painful upper miss or top. you can pile on the treble and it gets brighter not harsher

may be worth your time

I was interested in those speakers. Do you know if they are similar to the old Lynch Super V12 that Eminence used to make? Some of the descriptions I have read sound similar.

from what i understand its like a ev12L but with hemp cone. thats a very very loose association. i just know when we started developing the speakers those were 2 of my favorite starting points. the wheelhouse has big headroom like a ev12l but is smoother due to the hemp

Thanks, Sounds pretty killer!!! My amp needed a bit of an aggressive speaker for what I was going after, but I do like EVs, so I will have to keep that one in mind next time I'm looking for a speaker.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The EV thing has never sounded great for my tastes in clips, despite EV guys swearing by that style of speaker. I wound up ordering the Scumback J75, seemed to be a safe bet and I’ve been meaning to check out Scumbacks for a few years.
