So after almost a year, the 5153 50W is gone...

I should have known better. The same thing happened to me a few years ago with a 6505+. I really dug the 5153 at bedroom volumes, but at band volumes it was just to spiky and harsh/aggressive for me. I had a Legacy 1 for years that I never liked in the bed room, but was perfect with a band. Well now I have a Legacy 3. Its exactly what I remember my Legacy I being. Don't care for it alone, but with the band its perfect. When will I learn...
 
Understand.

I've gone through so many amps over the years only to come back to Marshall. Nothing sounds like one in a band mix.
 
I used to have a Legacy I. I ran guitar into amp with no efx. Friends tell me it was the best love tone I ever had.
 
5153 100W sounded glorious with the band when I saw VH earlier this year.

A local band uses the 50W & sounds great doing pop, rock & metal.

All in how you dial it in live......
 
I can understand how a 5150III (50 or 100w) would not translate well from a basement to the stage with minimal tweaking. Live, I never use ch 3, it's way too saturated. Highs never go above 9:00 and mids are never below 3:00. Amp gain never goes past noon. If more gain is needed at high stage volume then I use a boost. It's tighter than the amp gain. EVH amps cut wonderfully with these settings.

Ch 3 is only useful to me because I can keep the amp volume at whisper levels while practicing and still retain very good inspirational tone and sustain.
 
There are some amps that do work better at home and others that work better with a band. The mark of a great amp is one that excels in both areas with minimal tweaking.
 
Tweaking settings between the two environments? WOW, why didn't I think of that? LOL. This ain't my first rodeo kiddies, LOL. I have proven the 5150 isn't for me a long time ago, yet I bought another one with the same basic results. For those they work for, good for you. They are great amps, but apparently don't work well for me.

The only thing I find strange is that there would be that great of a difference between low and high levels. In my experience most amps suck at low volumes and you just put up with it and judge them at higher volumes. That said, if the legacy works better for you than wicked! I'm sure you could dial both amps within ballpark of each other though. Most higher gainers can be dialed in relatively close enough.
 
I've had the exact opposite experience; at band/gig levels mine sounds much better. I've found the 50 watt really starts to breath when the master is opened up. I use a little roland cube for jamming at home...Good luck with the Legacy :thumbsup:
 
What is your problem? Im not asking for anyone to "line up" to tell me anything. Just sharing my experience. Dick.

To the guy that PMed me, I cant respond for some reason, so Ill respond here. No, the L3 works fine at low volumes, I just prefer the 5153 under those conditions. Its really just personal preference.

OP, I had similar complaints about the 5150III. I might be getting another though, this time with the matching cabinet.

:thumbsup: with these settings. I pretty much do the same except my highs are rather "high", next gig I'll definitely try to cut more highs.
Where do you usually set the Lows and the Resonance for live?
 
I always used to crank the mids, cut bass + treb for band situations
