Friedman experts, please advise me on which amp would best suit me.
I would like to have access to semi-overdriven tones similar to Page and Hendrix, but also be able to kick things up a notch to early Van Halen or John Skyes era Thin Lizzy levels. I don't need anything heavier than the typical Van Halen stuff.
So, it seems to be to be a tough choice between the Dirty Shirley, Pink Taco, Small Box, or Brown Eye.
The Brown Eye seems to be the one that can do pretty much anything, but is also the most expensive, and I would sort of prefer to have combo rather than a stack.
The Dirty Shirely sounds awesome for covering the Zep stuff, but can't quite get the Van Halen sound. Maybe a boost or overdrive would get it there?
The Small Box seems somewhere in between the BE and DS, but I haven't heard it produce the same high gain sound as the BE, or as nice cleans as the DS.
The Pink Taco sounds really good, is inexpensive, and a convenient size, but seems like a bit of a compromise on tone compared to the others.
Seems like I should either save up for a BE and 2x12, or pick up a DS combo and run a pedal or some sort in front. Can the DS get the HBE sound with a boost in front?
Thanks!
