for me, it was a corona cali fender strat. i was 9 years old and had been struggling with my dads enormous guild d-40 acoustic for a while, so for my 10th birthday, my parents picked me up a classic black & white american strat with a maple fingerboard and a fender champ 110 amp. 19 years later, i still have the guitar, only i have outfitted it to resemble david gilmour's black-on-black strat complete with fender '69/fat 50's/duncan ssl loaded pickguard and neck pickup toggle switch. looks and sounds just as sweet as ever.

so what started YOU on the road to musicianship (and, for some of us, gear whore-ship)?

Yamaha Pacifica 112. Great first guitar! I'd still play it (with better pickups) today.

You got a US Strat for your first guitar??

Mine was a £80 Encore...

1993 Fender MIM Standard Strat. Still have it! Love it, it's a smoking guitar!! They were banging out great Strats that year and it the early 90's. Not to say they aren't now, but QC is definitely not the same today. :gethim:

Next year's present was a Kahler buick-sized trem mounted on it...with the crappy thumb-wheel locking nut. I was in heaven!

Memphis bass back around 1980, you young guys have NO CLUE how lucky you are today with the good choices you have for great prices......................

My first guitar was a low end beater Ibanez that I played for about 2 years before I sold it and picked up a Jackson Kelly Std (MIJ) bolt on that I still have 18 years later. It's been through a few pickups and is semi-retired now, but it has been a great guitar over the years.

My uncles 1980 NECK THROUGH Warmoth guitar. Solid brass hardtail bridge, brass nut, ancient Grover tuners and a trippy sponged paint job. The body was so light the neck dove down faster than a chick on prom night.

I didnt get the grades my father wanted me to get so he took it and sold it to a coworker and kept the money, despite me paying for the guitar from my paper route I had. What a dick.

My first guitar was a Yamaha acoustic.
My first electric guitar was an Ibanez RR250 flying V....I saved like crazy to buy that.

Mine was (and still have it) a 1980s version of the Gibson Melody Maker like the picture. Piece of crap right now but has sentimental value.

I was getting advice from my brother's best friend who claimed he was "very knowledgeable" about guitars since he had been playing for like 8 years. I wanted to play metal.... dude advised me to buy a Squier Strat (S-S-S, no hums on that badboy).   It was a great guitar to learn on but not ideal for metal, that's for sure! :aww:

My first electric was a $99 Terminator (w/built in amp) from Toys 'R' Us.

My first "guitar" was a bass. An Ibanez Gio. My first guitar was a Johnson acoustic. My first electric was a Gibson Les Paul Studio. The LP began the slippery slope.

Brand new Lotus brand strat style guitar for Christmas in 1985. Still have it but frets are worn completely down to almost nothing in spots.
