So, when did you start buying, selling, "getting into" gear?

my neighbor and now my best friend started music when he was 5 years old. music runs in his family, his father played. when i first saw and heard a 5150 full stack and him playing the fucking piss out of a wolfgang that i would learn later to be one of the prototypes peavey made with rosewood and eddie possibly played ($5,000+ guitar custom order sheet, long story as to how he got it and why)

his band in high school (different than one i attended, another long story) was very well known for the music they played and are extremely talented. can play anything from EVH to SRV to whitesnake to kansas to 60's songs. very van halen influenced and blues influenced, ive somewhat inspired him into the heavier playing (sweeping, etc)

he is a major signed christian artist now looking for a drummer in the area, has his own CD out, working on a second album, and does covers around the area. sings and plays at the same time (i still cant do that   :aww: )

but yeah, the 5150 roar is what got me hooked. i said "i want to do this" but i did not want to own two cabinets and a guitar head unless my playing could back it up. i refused to not be able to play properly, and would not allow myself to buy the gear up front - i earned my way over time IMHO - 13-14 years later, ive got my 5150 II, two 5150 cabinets, had my own wolfgang and sold it last year for one of my dream guitars - an all snow white ESP M-II, and a playing style that is always improving

i bought one of his cabinets, and bought my straight cabinet from CA. i believe this was 5 years ago. the cabinets will stay even though the speakers might not. the amplifier will stay with me for as long as i live. i only see me adding onto this and not trading/selling. alot of sentimental value, personal value, and moral values with this gear. its got me through hard times and great times with shows, recordings, and putting wow's on people's faces the same my best friend did for me when we were both barely teens. im still young and still have music to thank for some great friends and experiences. i have owned this rig for almost 6 years now - never sold or traded any of it.

oh yeah, and seeing REO speedwagon - free - in downtown charlotte, NC was also a part of it. never have seen anyone else not use, but abuse a whammy bar like that in a musical way - it put dimebag to shame, and sent chills up my spine. raw talent there.

I was always into gear, but not at the obsessive level that I am now. About 10 years ago I was at music school and putting together an original band. We played out for a few years and I wasn't picky about my gear. LP into Carvin halfstack. Maybe a pedal or two. Now I have a list a mile long of amps and pedals that I "need".

I've been into gear for as long as I can remember... I don't do too much of the buy/sell thing. I tend to stick with things for a while, but I love trying out and getting new stuff. I always have my eye on something new and different.

I've seen my uncle perform in a band ever since I was little, so was fascinated by all the music equipment ever since. I spent four years occasionally researching gear before starting to buy anything, then started small with a solid-state practice amp and my first guitar. Then I really got into trying different things and many many different ideas and approaches to gear. Once I finally got my MarkIV I was really happy and stuck with it since, but getting onto gear forums have really got hooked into GAS and different effect pedals. I'm glad too that I know have a JCM 800 since I passed up on the opportunity in the past. To this day I still evaluate what I can do with gear, and do get carried away with it at times. But ultimately I just want to keep it basic.

...and then before I knew it I was turning tricks for the latest AxeFX firmware some NOS tubes or a glimpse from a schematic of a Cameron HG Jose mod.

My first spree occurred right after I got my first real "good" job. That was 1985-86--I bought 5 Gibson and 2 Fender guitars that year. Still own 3 of those guitars, too.

This topic may have already been covered but I was curious to see when you all starting "getting into" gear? Not necessarly guitars/amps but when did you develop an interest in something and start buying and selling "gear" in order to obtain the "right" piece. For me, I got into BMX bikes and parts when I was 11 or 12. I read all the mags, hung out with guys who had nice gear and started buying/selling/trading in a quest to assemble the ultimate bike. It's been like that for just about anything I was seriously interested in since then including guitars and vinatge drums. It's safe to safe you are all like minded when it comes to guitar stuff, just curious if you have been dealing with this "compulsive" behavior as long as I have   Let the social experiment begin!!

Back in around 1978/1979 when I was 12/13, it all started for me.

In 1986 I got into bigger gear, and that up'd things a few levels, in terms of my expectations

In 1987 I got my 1st TC 2290 in a rack rig approach, and that changed everything.

Today-- Same guitar in the pic from '79
