Guys.
Have any of you that own or owned an slo ever try it with EL34's?? I'm thinking of giving it a try with mine..
Just wondering what any of you thought of it with those in there..

Likes/dislikes??

Cheers

Darren

Try the Soldano forum. There used to be a clip of an SLO with EL34's floating around somewhere. I heard it a long time ago and remember it sounded fantastic. There was no information on how the amp was set, what kind of guitar, pedals, etc..., so who knows how they got it to sound that way. I don't know if you can still find that clip but I'm sure those guys can point you in the right direction.

Honestly though, I wouldn't invest too much time into it. The SLO sounds so damned good the way it is that it's kind of pointless to change it unless you have like 4 SLO's and want a little different sound from one.

I would think that an SLO with EL34's would lack bass and sound a bit harsh. Many people complain that a stock SLO lacks bass and therefore seek to get the depth mod. The SLO already has a super prominent midrange so I don't imagine that EL34's will sound very balanced.

I experimented with JJ 6L6GC and SED 6L6GC. The JJ's were an improvement over the stock Sovtek's, a little less harsh. The SED tubes were even better. If I ever get an SLO again, I would definitely load it with SED tubes.

Fuck it though, if you do find something out be sure to let us know.

You need to change some stuff in the amp to try that or EL34 will blow some. Check Cliff's SLO hum thread.

Years ago forumite "2B" from Norway over at HCAF recommended this.
I've tried it (after emailing with Bill at Soldano) - sounded awesome.
Just increase the screen grid resistors (stock: 470 Ohm) to 1k/5Watt and adjust the bias.

Cool info duesey! 2B has 2 SLO's though and kept one stock with some 6L6's as well

Hmmmm...I wonder what my AvengerLO would sound like with EL34's?

I have a few SLOs and had thought about that too. I just didn't want to mod them. I got a Wizard MC with EL34s and I find the Wizard amp SLO voiced so similar that I don't think I would need the SLO in a EL34 now. But I would be very interested to hear more results from guys who have done it. :)

Think i may give this a go guys..

few resistors are easy enough to change and i may have some el34's lying around..

ill try it out and if not to my taste ill pick up a new set of sed 6L6's..

I always thought it was EL34 tubes

Now I REALLY don't understand how I like that amp lol

Lol!!

They sound great dont they!!..

Olaf saves the day!

could try some KT-66's if you had some around, before swapping grid resistors.

You'll need to increase the power rating of the filament supply resistors and the value of the screen resistors. I say this from experience (*sshole eBay seller).

JJ E34L's can be done with 470 Ohm resistors. Just mismatch the OT to the cab 2 to 1, i.e. 8 ohm cab gets 16 ohm tap. Try it!

Seriously man? Well, I always liked my SLO's better stock. I'd like to hear some clips with EL34's though. Put it up on youtube when you're done.

I have KT66 tubes in mine and like that combination the most in the SLO 100 personally. I also have some of the mods available so not sure how much that will effect things if a person didn't have the mods done and went with the tubes only. Great amp indeed.

Did you ever try the EL34s?

i just got my 50 watt tube head project worked out it is jcm-800 with a slo hod rod pre amp on el34 the to amps have alot in comen the power transformer is a clasictone the output a clasictone fender 60 watt the board point to point russion paper in oil alot left over parts if you want a reel el34 amp this is the way to go i cant crank it up need biger speackers

the problem is this the heaters in the el34s draw more curent then the 6l6s the output transformers are not the some el34s take 3.6k ohm the 6l6s take a 4.2k ohm the power transformer you need is for a marshall the output transformer makes all the difference
