Hi guys, thought you might appreciate a few pictures of a unique guitar which I am currently building, I was very lucky to put my hands a couple years ago on a limited stock of some very old completely 'rift sawn' highly figured premium grade Sapelli Mahogany, so I used some of it to create this unique 'rift-sawn' guitar... :)

The neck and body where cut inside the same blank...

This is how it turned out after the 10th coat, you can compare with the above 'unfinished wood' picture...

Fitting the hardware, this time I used some Sperzel...

This is one of my wood dealers which I went to visit yesterday, so I took some pictures of him holding the guitar made from the wood I bought from him a couple years ago from this exact same place...

The finish really looks like tru-oil... is it?

Yes correct, I use Tru-Oil on all of my instrument since 1996, had to stop for a few years back (2007-2010) because it was illegal to import from the USA due to shipping restrictions of flammable stuff but now it is possible to buy some on ebay and I have also found a local supplier... :)

Funny, in France they sell it using the trademark name Beretta, such an original name for gun stock finish...

Cool... it's also hard to find here in Canada, also had to import some through eBay
I have an Ibanez RG321MH, cheap but great guitar, which was starting to look pretty flat. I added 3 layers of tru-oil and it really made the grain (stripes) pop out with a nice amber coloration.

I recently used a mix of 1 part each of tung oil, boiled linseed oil and poly on a mesquite sign. Looks beautiful so I think I'm going to do more experimenting with rubbed finishes.

Tru-oil is varnish based isn't it?

Its not really like an oil finish, working with it is more like lacquer especially when you want to build up coats and produce a high gloss finish, the end result is very tough and durable, also if you ever get a scratch on the finish it is really easy to tough up which is a great advantage...

Many acoustic guitar builders are using Tru-Oil...

Here is a link to a complete guide on how to use the finish for those who wish to experiment...

Really cool wood.

Interesting neck joint... I thought it was gonna be a bolt on by the first pics, thought maybe it was just laying together.

Yeah, pure tung oil requires lots of coats to get enough buildup. The finish in your guitar actually looks a lot like the poly/oil mixture I used on the Mequite sign and had the same benefit of being easily repaired.

Thanks for the link.

I usually go for 15 coats on my guitars... I can get a really great result in 10 days finishing work...

Nice wood, nice work !

I think it's the first time I see a set neck from you.

Thank you all for your kind words, can't wait to wire it up!

I've been doing that for quite a few years on some of my models, I just dont really talk about it because I prefer the versatility of bolt-on necks...

A few exemples of glued in necks...
