First, this forum is awesome. I had sent out a handful of pickups and you guys gave me some great feedback and suggestions. I am super stoked and some of the recording people have done for me. I was given permission to use the clips. I will let them chime in if they want to to discuss specifics, but I couldn’t be any more happy with what I have so far. Next leads me to pickup naming. Right now, I’m looking at 3 higher gain offerings

1. The first was a pickup I started out trying offer a higher output EVH type (14.4K) but with a less common “short” A5 magnet that would have likely been in the 61 PAF that so many stories were based on. This ended up taking on a life of its own and suits many more styles than its original intent. This pickup is more clear and tight than standard A2 offerings and sits at an output range that is safe and capable of many genres. The short A5 has the clarity of the standard long A5 without the harsh high end. It’s a little fatter in the mids and faster attack than A2. One of the names I’m considering is the “Sunset Strip”

Dan Travis and his grail Larry 822

2. The second one was an based on a discussion to offer a spec similar to Lynch’s current pickup. It’s a 13.8k with an ALNICO 8. Nearly as strong as ceramic, but a more musical top end like A2 and the mids of an A5. I am thinking about calling this the “Wicked 8”

Some Lynch-esque riffage

3. The third was wanting something with a bit more oomph and low mids. This is a 17.6k short A5. With the output and grind of JB without the nasally mid bump and still retains the openness of lower output pickups and has more thump than the 14.4k predecessor. I don’t have clips of this yet but will be sending 1-2 of these out in the next week for demos and feedback. I haven’t started selling these yet, as I am trying to do this the right way and get some unbiased feedback from the field. No name for this pickup yet.

Thanks for listening!

Officially chiming in, in case anyone has questions about @scottosan pickup, or the clips I made (first two)

I specifically chose the "type" of riffs I did on the clips to highlight the various capabilities of the short magnet A5 pickup - i.e., a couple double fifth chords and triads to hear note separation, some chugging triplets and staccato to hear tightness, some slinky grooves to hear transient response, etc.

They were all done with my Larry I never shut up about.

That first clip sounds the best to my ears

Thank you

Killer sounding pickups, killer playing, great recordings. I'm reaching for my wallet for a Sunset Strip!!!

Appreciate it man! Scott really is onto something with the short magnet A5 - I'm actually doing some more "field testing" with it, this Halloween weekend, at a couple gigs.

It's a very clear, open, concise sounding pickup that works very well in all the amps I've plugged it into.

Thanks for the kind words and the clips are beyond anything I was expecting when I sent it out. Thanks again!

My website is what holding me up. My initial thoughts are to make a batch of 10 at a time so that I can most cost effectively get some more on the street at some ridiculously low introductory price. I’m meeting up tonight or tomorrow to do some more testing of the 17k version. Once done with that I’ll probably start out with the 3 high output variants.

Of course Scott, more than happy to help!

We need more guys like you making gear, in general.

Dudes.
I was able to play a few of these pups.
They're badass.
For reference, I have or have had - Motor City Detroiter and 2nd degree Black Belts, Wagner Godwoods, BKP Holy Diver and Nailbombs, SD Seth Lover, Antiquity, Whole Lotta Love, JB, JB with A2, Screaming Demon, EVH, Dimarzio SD, Fluence, EMG, Reverend Railhammer, all the Gibsons, Suhr SSH+, SSV, etc ...
Basically a shit ton of pups.
What I go for is tight pick attack, super dynamic/responsive, open, articulate, lively, airy.
I don't like compressed, flat, muddy, dull.

Scott is on point. His low output A2s are sweet, his 14k bridge is super dynamic and balanced, his 17k is like a Suhr Aldrich or SSH+ with more open airy punch.
You guys are going to want these pups.

His 60s spec single coils are pretty great too.
I'm not shining ya on, these pups are it. Dude is doing it right.
I will probably be stuffing them in all my guitars, and am even considering buying a nother guitar just so I can get a different set of pups.

I'll be making some detailed before and after clips of a couple of bridge humbuckers in a HSS Strat and Charvel with Floyd, 14k and 17k.

Let me know what kind of clips you'd like to hear. Sounds, style, clean, dirty...
I want y'all to hear em.

Thanks for the kind words. My stuff always sounds better when you’re playing them :dunno: I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel here. I sticking with some pretty well established specs that sound good and can be used to cover lots of ground. Although my preferred use of the shorter A5 magnet is something that I don’t see many people doing, It’s got the clarity and output of a standard long A5 without the shrill top end and is a little warmer in the mids. The main difference being that most high output pickups are machine wound. As you witnessed, you can safely go hotter with hand wound pickups without the congestion and loss of clarity associated withh high output machine wound pickups.
