David Bowie. Amazing songwriter.
...or how about David Allan Coe? He wrote a bunch of number ones....only after they were recorded by other artists.

How about an "unknown" songwriter.

Someone who was written a fair few big songs, but no one knows who the man/woman is?

Sounds like Diane Warren.

Holy Goat she has penned a few big ones!

Never heard of her before now.

I was really surprised she wrote I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing... I was always under the impression it was Aerosmith's own.

She must get a nice little check in the mail from time to time...

EDIT: Wow... By some estimates, her own company brings in $20 million a year in royalties.... Good on ya, girl!!!!

WARREN ZEVON

Jeff Lynne

Tom Petty

Patti Smith

gah, so many choices.

Elvis, Freddie Mercury Van Morrison, Chuck Berry, Neil Peart most all the songs written in the rush days was by him.., Mick Jagger/Keith Richards, Bernie Taupin.. and the list could go on..

Richard Thompson

For me (a huge Dylan fan) Richard is on the same plain, possibly better at ballad writing, and 10 times the guitarist Bob will ever be.

There are many more RT songs, but these are two of his biggest and I think a good representation of his style. He also does electric stuff with a full band.
