Now I don't want to be told to use my ear or find the right tuning for my music. :D

Just want a kinda idea what stoner/doom bands use for tunings.

Like

Cult Of Luna
Neurosis
Goatsnake
Down

Thanks.

Neurosis do some stuff in E drop A.
Goatsnake is unknown as they slowed the tape down a little in the master so its not actually possible to get that sound as lot of it comes from unnatural decay. Its loooow though.
Dont try to sound like down. they are the diet coke of sludge. eyehategod, crowbar and CoC all beat the shit out of Down. Seriously.
CoL are a poor mans neurosis and way too goth to be kvlt.

On the whole though you cant go wrong with B. It works for me. Tonally you want a 24 3/4" scale length or a baritone. 25 1/2" never seems to cut it.

Are you trying to play along with the music, so you need to be in tune with the song? Or do you just want to sound like them with your band?

Neither, curiosity, though I'd like to put some of the themes/elements into my sound. :)

Yeah, Down were my first stoner/sludge band other than Sabbath, but really... eh you're right. They're cool but when I wanna listen to Stoner/Doom/Sludge I go straight to Neurosis/CoL/Goatsnake.

Yeah Goatsnake tune pretty low, I like it though, it sounds quite eerie, I guess that might have something to do with the recording process though. Problem I'm having with stoner/sludge is that I tune in standard E most of the time and I don't really like tuning way down, I think I'll tune my guitar down to C# standard for the next load of band songs I write, I'm gonna have a tough time finding another guitarrist who'll wanna tune to anything but drop C  Let alone C# standard.

I'm finding it so hard to find info on Goatsnake, I can't even find the lyrics to "Innocent". Great song.

Because my main guitar is in E standard almost all the time, and my 2nd guitar is in drop B (Both have floyds, I tune them both the same when I have gigs coming up) But I have a 24.5" Epipphone goth les paul studio which sounds pretty thick but kinda muddy, might sound pretty good for stoner stuff, that's in drop B aswell at the moment I think.

C# standard will get you there.

I love Down, but I don't really consider them stoner or sludge. The songs they write have too many riffs and melodic content to be called that. They are just sweaty, dirty hard rock with a metal groove.

You need to brush up on some doom with that list.

Suggestions? I'm always open to hearing new bands. :)

I can only think of Sabbath and Electric Wizard as doom-ey stuff.

I don't know what I'd call Shape Of Despair, funeral metal/sludge/doom? I haven't listened to SoD for years.

I really like C# as a key and for tuning. :) It's nice. and heavy as hell but without sounding like core. :P

c# standard is awesome just low enough but not flubbed out, Down is the shit!

There's 3 major ones that I look at from mastodon and kylesa. Basically a standard tuning, a normal drop dropping the 6th to match the 4th then the low low one where the 6th is dropped two octaves below the 2nd string. In e this is dropping to b.

Trouble, Sleep, Acid King, to name a few. The Sword are permissively doom as well.

By the way, it's spelled saunter metal.

Ya know, heavy music that you listen to while walking at a leisurely pace...

Check out:

Kylesa, Burning Witch, Cough, Bongzilla, Behold! The Monolith, Sourvein, Torche, Sasquatch, Neurosis, Ocean, Intronaut, Doomriders, Big Business, SHRINEBUILDER, Caltrop, Asunder, Conifer, LESBIAN

big checkouts to Kylesa and Lesbian. Shrinebuilder is the Audioslave of stoner/doom.

The Sword aint shit. don't get me wrong i love the sword but they aint shit.

Literally none of those bands are doom bands.

To the OP, just like ANYTHING else in "stoner rock" the bands made the tunings the tunings didn't make the bands, it's all over the place, just use what you like/want. For example I'm writing a lot of stuff in DADGAD right now.

Yeah

doom is like:

Asunder, Ahab, Bloody Panda, Conifer [at times], Esoteric, Graves at Sea, Moss, Nadja, OCEAN [big doom], Orn.

Most of the other bands on this page are stoner or some hybrid.

Doom is like sub 80bpm whole notes. lol
