Hey all,

a while back, I got a wild hair and decided to try my VHT in a stereo setup with a Sunn head. The combo wasn't what I expected, but it was, however, awesome. The combination of a low-gain, high headroom, dark vintage crunch tone with the more saturated and cutting tone of the VHT D60 on top resulted in a huge tone that sounds just amazing, way more dimensional and, just, HUGE. so I've been looking for a head along those lines to combine with my VHT. been thinking something like a Sunn Model T, but they are pretty pricey for a vintage head IMO, (most likely thanks to hipsters buying them up in the wake of SUNN O)))) ). Played a Simms-Watts 100 yesterday, and besides sounding AMAZING on it's own for a sludge/doom type sound on the normal channel (also sounded great for a more brit-type vintage crunch, a la Hiwatt, on the brilliant channel). but it got me thinking about other heads I've seen these kind of bands play, and one that came to mind was the Sound City 120. recently saw a band playing one of these, and thing was just badass. even with a Rickenbacker and no pedals, it just killed. plus, the 120 goes for around 6 and the 50 can be had for even less.

has anyone owned or played one of these extensively? what's to know about them? what's the difference between the Dallas Arbiter ones (apparently Reeves designed) and the originals? are they reliable? my one big hesitation with buying a vintage head like these is that in my experience with my '69 Ampeg VT-22, it was in the shop seriously about once a week. once a month at the least. sounded amazing when it worked, though.

other heads to consider, vintage or non? I'd love to have a Hiwatt, but I don't want Hiwatt prices for a second head. also saw a cheapish Splawn QuickRod, how would that head combine with the VHT for what I'm after? I'm basically after a doom/sludge sound, but more modern with a more balanced tone and better articulation, ability to pull pinch harmonics (which i've found very difficult on typical sludge settings), etc.

Cheers!

You want the Splawn Nitro for that type of tone, not the Quick Rod -- the Quick Rod is more Hot-Rod Marshall. Also, get the KT88 NITRO. As far as Hiwatt, have you looked into a Reeves?

funny, I was just looking at a KT88 Nitro right before I checked in. My VHT has kt88's and I love it. I've looked at Reeves, but they are pricey.
