I'm trying to do another build but I can't find the right iron. I usually use Merren, but no response from him via email or phone. I also like Marstran (made by Heyboer). Again, no response via email or web submission. Classic Tone is gone. Soooooo what do?

If anybody has a spare Merren or Marstran 1202-55 or 784-139 and want to sell, let me know!

Merren was backed up even before covid. Mike Fortin got to a point of not answering for mods a long long time ago - it happens when things are backed up.

Honestly? I’d wait 2 weeks and see what happens.

Worst case is using Heyboer or mercury magnetics until Merren or Marstran get back. You can get HB iron fairly easily if you look at their catalog and order direct or call through a dealer to order if it isn’t already in stock. I’d run HB over MM, but in a pinch I’d still run MM. They do make top quality transformers, they’re just not the cheapest option, but then again neither is Merren.

You also need to remember this is holiday season and Merren runs his stuff alongside a full time job and family. Just good for thought.

We use them for several high end pro audio brands that I build gear for ... nice stuff and they beat out alot of the big boys in a blind shootout....good company to deal with as well. Not 100% if they do guitar amp stuff but its worth a shot.

Cheers

I managed to get hold of Marstran, but those are interesting options as well, thanks guys

Pretty sure Marstran has Heyboer building their transformers. I would say anything Heboer is good as well as Hammond but I would throw my money towards Heyboer if I was in the market.

Yes, Heyboer builds them to their specs.

Heyboer builds the Metropoulos transformers to "Metro" specs also.

The Heyboer Dagnall C1998 clone Output transformer is one of my favorites, I've always heard the Merrens are as good if not better, I bought one but I never installed it over the Metro C1998 so I will never truly know how good the Merrens are.

Try calling Mercury Magnetics.
Just so damn expensive. I still take it occasionally (almost always PTs) and justify it by pro-rating the extra cost over the life of the amp but it still hurts.

Yeah, They're not cheap but they are solid transformers.
I put in a 0100JM in my 100w Plexi a few years back.
Good stuff.
