Anyone can compare them ? I'm considering an SLO but the price makes it an expensive gamble if I don't like it. Would an SP77 through a 2/50/2 get me close enough to make a judgement ?

I'd be going for rock/classic-rock tones using hb equipped guitars.

Thanks

I don't mean to be sacrilegious, but I owned an SP-77, and thought it sounded better than the SLO I tried out in the store.

Too bad the price shot up on SP-77's. I sold a mint one for $350 about 2 years ago

I am not sure if I have heard a Soldano SP77 before, but I have played a SLO a few times.

The SLO is, to my ears, unbelievably good. It has an unmistakable midrange cut to it. I know it's the only Soldano to have the hi-fi DeYoung transformers in it, too.

I owned a 5150 as my first real amp and years later found and played a SLO. The SLO was everything I wanted the 5150 to be and more; smoother, near infinite sustain, usable gain, etc. Anything's possible, but I doubt you'd kick yourself for buying one.

If I didn't have my sweet Egnater rig, I'd probably have an SLO.

My opinion only... Equivalent heads sound better than rack setups in general. And in this case, you're looking at a preamp and power amp combination that just raw tonewise is going to be lacking vs an SLO.

Unless you need seperate EQs on each channel, and need to run fx in the loop or between the pre and power amps. If the SLO had a useable fx loop I'd probably own one... the way the loop sounds in them has always been the deal killer for me. Too much trouble for me to use a seperate power amp and the SLO line out for a WD or WDW rig either. I have plenty of gear, I'm just lazy. :D

The VHT poweramp will go a long way towards helping the SP77 for sure, but raw tone the SLO will probably trounce it.

Aha... Someone with Egnater and SLO experience. Can you get some pretty decent SLO sounds out of your Egnator modules? EG5, perhaps?

I love the Avenger/SLO, but I'd like to pair it with something even more high gain (more of a Death Metal sound) without having to carry around two amps – hence Egnater.

Oh, and I was using my SP-77 through my 2150. It ripped hard. I wish I still had that preamp.

I was thinking to use something like a GMajor with a midicontroller to tackle the volumeboostproblem. From all I read a rack-unit works fine with the SLO's loop so I hope the same goes for the SP77.

I've found I prefer heads over pre's plus the power amp. Ive played several SLO's and think they are very cool. IMHO get the head.

I'd go with a X88R & 2502 over a SLO, not the SP77 (had both versions of it).

Wieso dass den Herr doktor ?

Ive not played an SLO yet...only the HR's. A firend had a SP77 with a 2 90 2....it was really bright even with the treble off. A few tweaks would have taken care of that. I liked it other than the brightness.....
