A few months ago I replaced my Mesa F-30 combo with a Mark III head. I have a Mesa 1X12 extention cab with some sort of 90 watt celestion speaker in it (it doesn't say what model on the cab). The only problem is that the head doesn't fit on the cab.
I found a Marshall 1936 cab, made in England around 2003 for $300 at Guitar Center. It looks brand new. It has two celestion speakers, I'm not sure what's in there, I bet its stock though, The Mark III fits on top fine.
After bringing the Marshall cab home I figured out a way to get the Mark III to fit on top of the Mesa 1x12. I got some rubber feet from Mesa (the same that were on my F-30), mounting screws, and a piece of plywood. It seems pretty stable. As far as I can tell the only downside here is that it looks a little goofy. I can probably paint the board black to make it blend in.
Here are my questions...
The Mesa Cab is 8ohm 90watt. The Marshall has a mono 8ohm at 150 watts, or in stereo 16ohms at 75 watts. I'm more of a bass player, so my guitar rig is rarely played outside the house, I'm not even running the Mark III master volume much past 1.
Would it be safe to run the Marshall cab in stereo and is there any benefit?
I see the reviews of the Chinese cabs are terrible, but this one was made in England. Are the materials different? Are there any drawbacks to the 1936 cab that I should know about? I'm pretty easy on my gear, it won't take much abuse. The Mesa cab looks like it might survive an apocalypse.
I think the two cabs sound very similar, but I'm digging the extra bass I get from the Marshall 2X12. According to GC's return policy, I can still take the Marshall cab back. I'm tempted to take the easy way out and keep them both.
I'd have less $ in both of them combined that it would cost for me to get a Mesa 2X12 with VC30's, and I'm not sure I can afford one in the near future anyway.
Would you hang onto the Marshall cab or take it back? In either case, I'm keeping the Mesa 1X12.
