Every time I've mixed speakers, it seems to take away from the overall sound in some ways. I've had plenty of speakers and many different cabs over the past few years, but four of the same speakers has always sounded better to me than any sort of combination. I'm wondering what Rig Talk thinks.

I have had success both ways. The only big disadvantage to mixing speakers is the in a live situation, I usually only have on mic, so I have to choose the speaker I want to mic. With recording, I use 2 mics, so its not an issue.

I recently had success min mixing a Scumback scumico with a H75. The H75 didn't have the sweetness of the scumico, but had more punch. the Scumico didn't have the punch. Having both gave me the best of both worlds.

Definitely been there....I'm running all the same speakers right now, and I feel like it gives me the best response.

I've had mixed results. I think it comes down to the right mix of speakers in the right cab with the right amp...there's no "right" mix of speakers without the other two variables taken into consideration.

+1. My Avatar sounds awesome with a mix of G12-H30's + WGS Veteran 30's. I liked the sound of the WGS ET-65 mixed with both of the above (not all at once) but I think they sound best (in my cabs at any rate) as a straight-up matched quad.

+1 Agree 100%. I hated the typical G1230/V30 mix when I had it in my cab, in my buddy's cab it kills! I love the X pattern with CL80s and G12 80s. Some Xs work and others don't. I will check the there's more to it than that button.

I think I prefer not mixing, just from my experience, which is pretty limited

i like having all the same type of speakers in a cab.

if i feel like mixing speaker types , i just add the second cab.

i like to mix. i first started mixing speakers when i started playing with more than one amp. really like to run open back with closed backs, the differences in speakers used for the two applications as well as the differences in physics of the sound propagation make a really full sound.

right now i mix (1) 12" weber alnico blue dog (pre rola doping and 100 watt rating) with (1) 12" weber ceramic silver bell (both with pre rola doping and 100 watt rating) in my orange PPC212 (wired in series for 16 ohm cab). this cab sounds sweet with a number of amps i own. i use this setup either stand alone or as a 'effect dry' amp in the center of a stereo field.

i usually mix the above amp with 2 more amps:
- 1x12" crate loaded with an eminence bell (1228K), usually mixed with something with an American kinda voicing.
- 1x15 or a 2x12 music man. the 1x15 has a squareback in it, the 2x12 has ceramic eminence speakers

other combo's that i remember sounding good:

- reeves purple with CTS squarebacks
- EVM-12L with black shadows (mesa style)
- cts squarebacks with eminence bells

Def mix! Seems to work best in 2x12s, still working on a 4x12 mix. I have had a couple of 2x12 cabs lately that were not quite right for the application, and I found the only way was to mix. Works awesome!! HIGHLY recommend the WGS Vet30(or reg V30) and ET/65 combo in a 2x12 for classic rock, to hard rock, perfection with a Marshall-esque amp!!

depends a lot on the amp
best band situation cabs I've heard were a Framus Cobra frontloaded cab with stock reissue greenbacks (probably chinese) and my friends frontloaded Cab with chinese V30's and G12H30's in X pattern (that thing completely buried the Mesa oversized cab I was using)

Depends what I am after. For me adding that 2nd cab is really the same as mixing. I use 2 Thieles now, 1 EVM 12L and 1 EVM SROa. Simply magic together. Great by themselves, but magic together.
