Just got this Marshall mod back from him yesterday. I had a spare 90's Super Lead sitting around that was begging for some divine intervention. And, the worst thing is, I had totally forgot about this amp getting worked on, and it shows up yesterday (isn't that awful?)....
Anyway, I wanted Dan to make me an amp in tone similar to that of an Aldrich mod. But, with a big nut sack and some other extras. Dan spent much time working with me on this and came up with some suggestions to make this amp fit exactly what I wanted in terms of functionality and tone. Of course, being a Mike Fortin pup, one can expect only the very best in components and workmanship in a mod. It is very quiet with the DC heater regulator too, just like Mike's. Anyway, I don't like too much complication and options, as this just creates uncertainty to me and is more difficult to dial in. So, we outfitted this with Gain1/Gain2 and Master1/Master2. Master 2 is foot-switchable as a solo boost and takes its gain from G1/G2, just like M1. But, we added a tube driven parallel FX loop that is either on or assignable. When it is engaged normally, the loop functions as it normally would. If I select assignable, it only engages for M2, which is great for leads. The variable input drive pot normally on an Aldrich has been replaced by a toggle. Also on the back is my favorite....Thump and Depth. The resonance shift with the Thump is subtle and the Depth is chest-thumping. Also, one of my favorite things is an external bias, which is also included.
Tone wise, it is typical Aldrich hot-rodded Marshall, with lots of definition. It stays tight on leads in the upper registers without falling apart as some amps do and there is very little compression on the top side as well and the lows/grind stays together without getting all muddy and shit.
Dan works out well for me being in the UK, as I have a UK delivery address and it makes for ease on shipping to and from and easy access to him. For those people that want some quality work done, by all means, check out Dan Gower. As a player, he's got some really cool ideas on functionality and this, along with his mad amp mod skills is a win-win in my book. We are already contemplating the next mod.
Here's a couple of top side chassis shots. I know, I know...clips! I owe a lot of clips these days and will get around to it. I just moved from the Madison Square Garage to the Testosteroom and got to get set up. Also, a few weekends of gigs, so no time right now. I really didn't have time to get into this yesterday, but glad I did. This bad boy may get taken out in public this weekend.
