So y’all talk to me about this cab and these speakers. Lol. I just made a deal for one locally. Looking to downsize from hauling the EVH 412 to shows. I’ve heard the the Small Blocks have a more rolled off high end compared to Greenbacks. This probably won’t hurt my feelings, as my 2005 QuickRod tends to be on the rip your head off highs anyway.

anyway… would love to hear some thoughts on the cab and speakers. Thanks!

I've never had the pleasure of trying out either the small block, or the big block speakers but I've heard they were basically created to work with the Splawn amps. So, I'm betting you can't really go wrong with them. I have two Splawn 4x12's, but neither of them have the SB/BB speakers in them. One of mine is the Creamback/Vintage 30 mix and the other has Eminence Man o' War/Governor mix in it. I have to say though, that I like the Eminence loaded cab better than the Celestion loaded cab. Not to mention, that the V30's that were in my cab are Chinese made. That disappointed me a bit. If you check out this link from the Splawn Forum, there are clips of the different speaker combos with both the QR and the Nitro.. Great resource for getting an idea of how they sound.

25 watt small blocks or 55 watt?
I have a Splawn 2X12 with the 25 watt version small blocks and they sound great ,a very good "home" cab, the 25 watters break up pretty early.
they sound (to me ) like green backs with better bass response. they are darker than regular greenbacks as well.
I swapped them out for Scumback M75's because I have those in my 4X12 and like being able to keep my EQ settings constant between cabs
but I sometimes think about putting the small blocks back in as the M75's need a little volume to sound their best and I tend to use my 2X12 at home a lot more than my 4X12. I think you'll love it with the quickrod. If I didn't have the M75's in my 4X12 I never would've taken them out.

My Splawn 212 has 55w Small Blocks and I couldn't be happier. The descriptions you've heard are pretty accurate. My guess is that you will love it. I have mine up on road case and it easily competes with my Mesa V30 loaded Traditional Slant cab. I'm a basement home player only.

I would love to try a set if I could find some used somewhere.

I have both the Splawn 212 and EVH 212. The tone and resonance are pretty close. The EVH breaks up just a hair earlier. Going from a 412 to 212, you will also appreciate the dimensions of the Splawn cab too. It's slightly larger than most other 212's cabs, which helps give it more overall body.

I'm sure you love them once they loosen up a bit, I may get an empty cab from Scott and put mine back into that one so I have a "home cab"

Ok. Some thoughts after a few days with the cab. The construction is fantastic. I am not sure about the Small Blocks though. They sound radically different for the Greenbacks that I have been using. I've been trusting knobs, but haven't really gotten anything that really blows me away. I will know for sure if they will be handing around after band practice this week. That will be when I can put some serious volume on them.

Well, it is official. I do not like the Small Block 55s. With some volume on the speakers they do not get the sound I look for out of my rig.

every rig is unique , lots of people love the CreamBack M-65's , I couldn't get rid of them fast enough.
what's missing or not happening for you with these?
too bad you're not local to me , I'd let yo try the 25 watt version of the Smallblocks I have , see if they differ at all from the 55 wat version

Just curious how many hours of playing do you have on the 55's? I think itt takes a good 20 hours or more to break them in and as you said new speakers are really stiff.

Yeah - I remember when I got my Splawn 212 I had to really bite my tongue knowing it was going to take a bit for the speakers to break in. But yeah - not all speakers sound great to everyone's ear. So glad we have a fair amount of choice.

I'm trying to be patient with them. I'm going to give them a month to break in, and then I will go from here. They just sound completely different than the greenbacks that I'm used to.

different how? the 25 watt ones I had in my Splawn 2X12 sounded very close to my greenbacks except they handled low end tighter and the highs were a little rolled off.
now my smallblocks have a lot of hours on them so time may loosen them up so you like them.

I’ve got all small block 55’s in a 4x12 that I believe are broke in (got them second hand) and I think I prefer them over the WGS ET65’s although those are new with about 12 hours on them. They need to be broken in more so I can get a better answer
