Thanks to GRK, I have a current generation Quickrod waiting for me at home today. I've had a look at every resource I can on the Quickrod, but I also love to hear advice from owners. Therefore, what are your personal tips and tricks? I'll be running the Quickrod through an Egnater 4x12 with V30s.

I had a Competition. Here are a couple -
1. BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THE SOLO BOOST. Initially, set it to about 1/4 and slowly bring it up. By 1/4, I mean 1/4 of the way between 0 and 1. It comes on hard and fast. If you're not careful, you may wind up with 100 watts in the ears.

2. 1st and 3rd gear can be EQ'd similarly, but will end up sounding too bassy on 2nd gear with the same settings. Tweaking for 2nd gear makes the other gears sound thin. This isn't really a tip, just an observation.

Start with all the EQ's at around 12:00 and go from there. You can not EQ it like a Marshall even though it is "Marshally". I set my Presence at 3:00, my Bass at 10:00, my Mids at 10:00 and my Treble OFF. There is still plenty of treble with that knob turned off, but I really like what the treble turned off does for the gain character.

I absolutely love Gear 1 and Gear 3 is a blast too.

  I did that with a QR I had, accidently hit the boost without noticing where the knob was, scared the shit out of me

I used a volume pedal in the loop of my QR to try to tame the volume.

My Competition sounded best with low presence and treble.

Do yourself a favor and get an attenuator. Those Splawns are insanely loud.

I'm not a fan of treble off

i'm also not a fan of using a hotplate with the QR...does something to the tone I don't dig and the master works well enough where you really don't get any benefit from it IMO....

anywho, V30s with the QR aren't usually the popular choice for the amp.....alotta that probably has to do with cabinet construction too I'm sure....I never played through an egnater cab

in any event, when playing at lower volumes, keep your solo boost knob at least at 9:00...that'll add some beef to the tone....some people play the amp with the solo boost engaged at all times....just don't hit the button on the footswitch with it at that setting or you'll blow your eardrums out =D

start with your settings at noon..the treble knob is pretty interesting....in my experience, turning the treble down gets you a more vintage type of sound...little more chewy in the mids....but with the treble running higher you get more of a nasty (in a good way) type of grind which I dig....I never run my treble lower than noon....i pretty much run everything at noon

I like first gear, OD2 with the gain dimed and everything else on noon
I also like third gear OD2 with the gain at around 10:30 or 11:00

since putting the el34bs in my amp, I dig second gear as well...

you should join the splawn forums, dude..lots of clips, tips, tricks, settings and discussion over there..

- Don't listen to the "consensus" opinion on what speakers sound good/bad with it. Your personal preferences may not follow that group consensus so try what you have and go from there.

- Don't bother using the loop at bedroom volumes, unless you either use your effects processor or a volume pedal/volume box to bring the overall volume back down, because you'll have to turn your gain channel volume up to get out of the "shit zone" when the loop is activated.

- Treble on zero sounds pretty cool imo, I would at least try it for yourself.

:)

also, dial it in with your ears, not your eyes....sometimes a knob set to a position that looks totally stupid sounds great..

treble almost off with mids up is what I did too actually! looks weird, sounds great :D

Treble off here also.... or not past 9 O'clock. Mids up, presence varies.
Great Amp.

All my settings are around noon. I tried the treb turned back and didn't care for it either, I also never cared for the 50w mode...2nd gear od2 and full power for me baby!!

Thanks for the help so far guys! Here are a few quick thoughts:

The Quickrod is everything I thought it would be and more. I loved the Avenger it replaced, but at this point the Quickrod covers a lot of the same territory and is much more versatile. I also really like the clean channel. I setup the Q-rod in a wet/dry/wet configuration (Hot Plate line out to G-Major driving a SS PA) and I'm getting excellent results. I dialed up a little dual delay with my Strat and played U2 tunes which was a lot of fun. On the distortion side I like both the treble off and at 12:00 depending on the tone I'm searching for as well as the low volume tones using just the solo boost as the master. I like how the gears change the overall landscape of the tone because the Avenger really only had the aggressive sound no matter how you dialed the gain. Also, the way the Q-rod cleans up is excellent. I can go from clean sounds with my Strat's singles to all-out warfare switching to the bridge SD Custom. I've been playing with backing tracks recently and I'm floored by how well the Q-rod sits in the mix. It slices through easily without being overwhelming and surprisingly, it's not as bright as my T-verb. The Egnater cab has nice salt-n-pepper grill cloth the cuts down on the piercing treble. As far as heavy tones, I'm happy with the tightness of the bass and the crunch of the tone. Playing along with MOP and Orion was great. I don't know that the Q-rod will every sound as scooped as the MOP tone without an external EQ, but it plain sounds good to me.

You're in love! (Now that would be a cool tone to cop with that amp)
