Splawn Quickrod vs Budda Superdrive80

I can't speak to the Budda but I've been playing a Quickrod for years and still love it everytime I hear it. Great, great amps. Amazing live and always cut through the mix.

I played the SD-30 and thought it was a cool amp. A bit more of vintage vibe. Can't really think of anything wrong with it per say. Decent for sure.

But bang for your buck it is hard to beat a Quick Rod. More versatile and better OD, cut, tightness, etc. Dare I say the quality is higher too but I've never opened up a Budda. They are super articulate though - maybe to a fault. Some people fight with them so I think it more depends on what you plan on doing with a new amp. If you want a tight, articulate, punchy amp then get the Quick Rod and pair it with the right cab/speakers. Scott does phenomenal work and provides excellent customer service.

Do you gig? What genres? etc.

Also, I would highly recommend a used one. You can find a used QR in the sub $1,200 range. You won't have to wait forever either - but I'm not trying to take money out of Scott's pocket. The new QR with all the bells and whistles are the bee's knees I hear (B+, old/new switch, mid cut, loop vol,)

Mainly interested in cleans, mid gain (AC/DC, Pearl Jam), and maybe some sludgy metal with a boost or two.

Also looking at a Deliverance60...

I don't gig and I've already got a VH4, Plexi, Trainwreck clone, and old Fender.

I'm looking for an easy to dial in amp that will get me sparkly cleans, authentic raw mid gain, and maybe some 80s Rock.

Looking for the best tone and I'm unconcerned with bells and whistles.

Thinking more about it..mid gains at a reasonable volume...not conversation or tv, but lower club volumes.

That's the most important.

The Budda SD80 is cool amp, but its insane loud. The taper on the Master Volume is not really good, cause its not lienar. the sound is not cutting, more like a creamy bass heavy overdrive which is almost too much and too fat. I suggest you to check the Soldano HR25 amp, You van get every nuance of overdrive (from mild crunch to metal and everything inbetween) but not a Fender like crystal clear clean. So if you play mostly with overdrive the HR25 is beast of an amp. Its optimized for lower volumes. From TV to Stage Volume you get that cool feel under your fingers due to the circuit and built in variac. It has big trannies and 5881 big valves, so dont worry its not a mini amp with weak bass. Amp looks small but the sound is big and cutting.

Forget about the Budda then. MV is very touchy. Also, I didn't really care for the lower gain settings on my SD80. Not enough cut. At higher gain settings I liked the Budda, but missed that Marshall grind and cut that the Budda just doesn't have. Budda was alot smoother sounding than a Marshall.

Between the two, I'd go with the Buddha.

I had a prePV SD30 II and agree with @boost, that the Budda did not have the cut of my Marshall DSL. I know EL84 vs 34, but still. I like the amp a lot, but if you comparing a Budda vs Splawn, I'd go Splawn. I have a Pro Stock and that ended my search for a while. It cuts, has versatility, great features the Budda doesn't have and the Loop Master Volume works really well.

For a more Marshall sound with more cut that's sits better in the mix but has a thick tone, try the Budda SD45. It's brighter than the SD30 and quieter than the SD80. It is pretty loud though.

Doesn't the Budda have shared EQ between the 2 channels? I had a SD 45 for a minute. Stupid loud.It went from to quiet to rip your head off and no in between. Base on my experience, Splawn all the way.

Splawn. No question. I've had sound engineers galore compliment my tone then be amazed when they find out, "That's just your amp's overdrive... no pedals?" QR is brilliant at all volumes.
