Hi guys
I am new here - please be gentle
I bought a Friedman SS-100 in june when GAS got the best of me. I have owned some nice amps thru the years, but I am a die-hard Cornford fan and just sold everything else along the way (Marshalls mostly as well as some other boutique stuff).
But from the first time I heard the SS100 I knew I had to get one. Being a huge Steve Stevens fan it was unavoidable. And the tone of the amp is indeed spectacular (its the fatness thing, the mids are sooo tasty and the compression and feel of the amp makes it almost play itself compared to the somewhat more strident cornfords).
Ok - during the summer I have not really had time to play it all that much, so it sort of just stood there .. waiting. The little ray-gun got all dusty. But now, finally, its time to really put it thru the paces. Even though the amp sounded alright (within reason) at low volume, I decided to try the trick of jumping the FX loop and run the master at 5-7 and controlling volume with return level on the loop. Wow - big difference to my ears. The amp simply sounds fuller and I especially likes how I can dial back on the guitar volume and get an almost-clean plexi sound. Initially, with the MV alone (at lower volume) those sounds was too thin to be useful.
But I am curious .. why is that ? Does the loop sit after the phase inverter, so the efx loop return level, actually acts as a PPIMV ?
Another question - I run the head thru my Cornford 4x12 solid-pine cab with V30's. Thats a very special cab, speakers front mounted but the pine resonates, making everything sound extra juicy
The friedman likes that cab and the speakers. It does not like my old early 80's Marshall cabs (a 1982 slant with 4 greenbacks sounded particular pants and thin and the 2x12 1936 jcm800 cab with V30's is not much better). I would like a 2x12 for portability, so insisting that the plywood JCM800 1936 is not a really bad cab - what speakers would it make sense to try instead of the V30's ? I think I just need more bottom end really - And the leadtone with SS100 and v30's are to die for - wouldn't really want to compromise too much with that.
