Man, what a difference. My wolfgang has always been one of the better playing guitars I've owned. Recently I found the frets a little worse for wear. Since I dont like low frets and these had been dressed once before I opted for a refret with SS6105 wire. Part of the refret was leveling the frets with a Plek machine.

I've heard all the arguements that SS doesnt sound as good as NS, or a Plek machine is only as good as the user.

I've had the guitar for a couple weeks now and play it everyday. I cant hear a difference in the tone. Maybe SS would make a difference on one of my other guiatrs but on this one I cant hear it... It does have a huge impact on the feel of the fretboard. The SS frets are so much smoother then NS, there's almost no drag at all when bending strings. I also dont get that digging in feeling when using vibrato. Single notes sound cleaner, and may even sustain a bit longer. The guitar is definitely easier to play. It hasnt gone unoticed at rehearsals either. My band members have commented that my playing is more precise since I got the Wolfgang back...

The fretboard feels fantastic. The action is 1.2mm off the 12th fret on the high E string. There's no buzzing at all with moderate playing. I can get the strings to buzz with a hard picking attack but thats understandable...

Phil Jacoby at Philtone did the work. Phil was very easy to deal with and answered all my questions. He understood my expectations and was able to explain exactly what he could or couldnt do within reason... The guitar came out great!!! I'd recomend Philtone to anyone based on my experience...

I've had Phil work on several of my guitars and basses, his refrets (both PLEK'd and not PLEK'd) are absolutely fantastic. Plus he's a great guy!

Anyone know his average turnaround time for a refret/plek?

sent him a guitar, a older charvel jackson ,i paid 300 for it with the intentions of turning it into a modded player ,he tells me about a week to 2 weeks, a month later ,he tells me it will be done in about a week ..guess what 2 weeks later still not done..that was a year ago and have never heard from him again..i washed my hands of him and the guitar..

That's your property, man. Demand it back or give him a swift kick in the balls. :gethim:

Damn, I heard alot of glowing praise for this guy over at TGP.

Sounds like it could be riskier for remote customers who ship their guitars to him compared to the local customer base who go there in person.

Phil turned mine and a friends guitars around in three weeks. We brought three guitars down for refrets.

Is 6105's what the Wolfgangs had for fretwire? Where did you get the SS 6105 at? Thanks.

Phil is a pro. He has worked on a couple guitars and a neck for me. Definitely knows his business and a good guy.

Well, it sounds like Phil has some 'splainin' to do here. He's going to lose potential business because of stories like the one above.

how hard do you you guys play that you go through frets and need to put stainless stell frets? i've had a guitar for 26 yrs that i've play pretty much everday and had them crowned in the 80's thats it. 9 gauge strings and medium heavy picks.

Good question. It seemed to me that the fret wire used by peavey was softer then most. After 4 years I had the frets dressed, 4 years later and they were worn to the point it needed a refret. I figured I'd give SS a shot.

I also have guitars from the 80's that have been dressed years ago and show very little fret wear after lots a play time...

Yes, the stock frets were 6105's. Philtone supplied the SS fretwire model # FW6055S
