Stereo with Herbert and VH4...thoughts and questions

I want to run a stereo rig with 4 distinct tones. Clean, crunch, rhythm, lead.
Also, to save on effects redundancy, I was going to combine the preamp outs from both heads using a Y cable -> to effects -> then split the signal with a stereo effect to "fx return". Is this summing of channels acceptable?

Since the Herbert is 3 channel, when I want a light crunch, should I run the VH4 in channel 2 and the Herbert in 1?
Can the GCX switch the Herbert between 2- and 2+ if I mod the head?

I'm wanting to run everything with a GCP/GCX system.

Thoughts or recommendations?

It should be able to switch it. I switch mine with the tc gmajor onboard switch.

Be aware that you will definitely face ground loop issues here.

I have a stereo setup with VH4 and Mako with independent FX units for both except rack-Wah. I spent serious amount of time finding the source of ground loop and still it is a bit difficult situation as I have my setup built so that on some occasions I use only another rack, sometimes only the another, sometimes both, sometimes wireless and sometimes cable. But Im very happy with my tones.

...and everything is controlled by MIDI from GCP+GCX (except wah).

if you have ground loopsmtry the ebtech hum eliminator 2 in between

MAGICAL!!!

In my opinion, even better is to find the root cause and eliminate it. If not possible to cure any other way, then using line isolators such as Palmer or Ebtech is a cure. In addition these line isolators helps on finding the problem connections, but placed incorrectly they can affect one's tone.

And these are not to be taken as words to discourage anyone considering stereo rig - Just to point it out to be aware of the potential challenge of ground loop. And as mentioned, there are well-working solutions to it. But let's not go to the ground loop issue until (once again) someone of our fellow forumites faces it.

OK...

doing more research...the GCX CAN switch the 2+/-. Which brings up another possible issue.

Between the VH4 and the Herbert, are all channels using the same number of gain stages? So I don't need to worry about going from 2- to 2+ on the Herbert and 2 to 3 on the VH4 and then suddenly having them out of phase...

Thank you!
