I've been wanting to pickup something to make some drum beats on for writing purposes, preferably software for my PC. I came across the Steve Slate Drums EX for a cheap price and I'm a bit confused by how it works. Would I need to get a sampling/midi sequencing program or some kind of controller? Or do i just need my PC? It comes with Kontakt Player3. They make it sound like its a stand-alone virtual instrument, but it's not 100% clear on it. I'm a noob with this stuff, so any advise or clarifications would be great.

Yeah, you can use it as a standalone or as a VSTi in a DAW. Ive been using it for a while now. I made a tutorial video...

I hate the Kontakt player but I really like the samples... For me the DKFH has the easiest interface of them all... This is an example of the Metal Kit that we used on a song called Eye of the Wasps.

no midi grooves right? kinda like Oceanway drums I just got. Just the player and great sounding drum samples. Kontact is kinda a pain to work with for a drum library, but kontact can be pretty efficient with sample libraries and is pretty stable.

Sweet :D I just picked up SSD EX at MF for $30. Can't wait to try it out!

Mine came with some midi grooves. I run SSD with Reaper, you can edit the midi files too.

One SUPER cool thing you can do with SSD is record your drummer on an electronic kit, then go back and use the SSD sounds.

Here's a clip I did with SSD for my band's demo.

good info, I'll be getting into this in a few months

My drummer uses it in his studio for sample replacement of bad drum hits or when his clients bring in crappy drums he replaces everything but the cymbals.
