Hello rigtalkers !
New strings for and new tunings for my Gibson Explorer cherry beuty ... And it's obvious - setup , again ...
Intonation - check
Neck bow - check
String Height - chceck

But ... how about stop bar height ? I left mine stock.
It should be all way down . or maybe at the point where strings cannot touch the back of the bridge ?
There is so much BS over net , that all the wya position improve tone and sustain , blah blah blah ... facts please !

Is there any "proper" position or maybe it's just down to preference ?

just make sure that you dont drop it so low that it forces the strings to make contact on the posterior aspect of the bridge, that will cause binding and extra pressure on the bridge which can cause it to flatten out over the course of time.

the higher you raise the stop bar, the slinkier the feel of the strings.

which is why some people "top wrap"

Mine's all the way down, against the body of the guitar. I don't top wrap -- go straight thru.

Yup , I know aboit top wrap , guy from my avatar is know for that ;)

Mine are both all the way down and I top wrap. Even if I didn't top wrap they still do not hit the back of the bridge on either (Nashville on one and ABR-1 on the other). Not hitting is the key here. As far as tone, feel, etc..I don't know. Tuning stability increased on the ABR so I did the same for the Nashville even though I had no tuning issues on that one.

I like it all the way down but some folks have methods about particular string break angles and set their stop pieces accordingly.

There is no right way here. I personally rather have the bar higher so that the strings are not hitting the back of the bridge. People will sell you snake oil that tone is better with the bar all the way down thinking because the stop bar on the face of the guitar.... but even all the way down only the ends of the stop bar touch the face anyway...right where the studs are.
