Hey everyone,
I got a 5150 Iconic a couple of months back. It's a great head, blows away both of the 50w versions from EVH I've owned in the past. I'm absolutely convinced that in a blindfold test or a situation where players didn't know the price or the number of tubes in it, most of them would love it. It surprised me too how good it sounds, but that's not why I'm here.....
I live in an old building in a small studio apartment and have been having some real noise problems that I think may be due to some kind of electrical interference or something. Single coils buzz like crazy, especially when I stand near the amp, but sounds much much better when I move towards the center of the room, away from the amp. I'm talking the kind of buzz you can often still hear even when I'm playing!
I stopped using the single coils all together with that amp, and am playing with a single humbucker guitar with a JB in it, though I've tried various pickups and pots etc. The buzz isn't so bad with the humbucker but for some reason there's a whole lot of buzz when the volume pot is on 10. It immediately drops significantly once I roll it back to 8 or 9, regardless of how much gain is on the amp. I can pull back the volume and jack the gain and the buzz doesn't come back. The other day it got to the point where the humbucker started to squeal on and off as well, which I believe could be somewhat controlled by the volume as well (although I'm not sure on that part).
I've never had noise like this and seems like it might be something electrical, maybe bad wiring? I don't know... I also have a couple digital amps-- a Spark and a Strymon Iridium-- which don't have this problem at all. Only the tube amp, which backs up the electric interference thing maybe? I'm pretty sure my previous tube amp had a similar problem but can't remember for sure now.
Anyways, what should I do to get this noise/buzz thing under control?! Here's a pic of my rig as it stands....
Thanks everyone!
