i have dunlop clip-lock straps screwed directly into all my road guitars (as i did some pretty violent movement in my old bands) and those never failed on me and sent my guitar flying and/or broke my strap like all the usual button-types did at some point (dunlop, schaller, etc.). but again, i was very aggressive with my guitar onstage. if you're not throwing the thing around night after night like i used to, any of the button-types will do fine. just make sure you either use wood glue or put in a small piece of toothpick alongside the screws to ensure a tight fit that wont come loose or eventually strip the screw hole (which will render your original strap pins useless as well). and always, ALWAYS tug on the strap once or twice after you've snapped it in to make sure it's locked in before you put it on and start playing, as the dunlops can be especially problematic in making you think it's locked when it really isn't.
for the guitars i keep at home though, i just leave the factory strap pins on. no reason to put strap locks on something i never use live.
