Dude, Maiden use single coil sized humbuckers, not real singles. Its the JB jr I believe! :)

None of the Maiden guitarists use single coils in the bridge though. I love Strats with a full size humbucker or something like a JB Jr in the bridge.

i know that dude, but they wouldnt be as thick as a full humbucker, they'd be lacking something right?

They sound very close. Only Janick uses the JB Jr though. Dave uses the Hot Rails and Adrian uses a full size DiMarzio Super Distortion.

Does Malmsteen and his crowd count? I know he technically uses single sized stacked humbuckers, but they sound like singles? Also, I think John Norum used Dimarzio singles at some point, but Dan666 could probably help you out more there.

think in a strat they'd sound good for more modern metal tones? or is that just.......no?

Depends how modern you're talking about.

IIRC, Deep Purple used to be considered a metal band. Blackmore was a Strat user....now, not so much. :aww:

anything decent, fairly high amount of gain modern.

What kind of bands are you talking about? I remember my Vigier sounded great in B tuning with a Duncan Custom in the bridge.

Well if you're playing through a real modern sounding amp then I'm sure a Strat with a humbucker could do those tones.

Well, I'm no professional but I run a strat every once in a while through my Einstein and it can sound pretty brutal. I prefer to dial it to a sick lead tone rather than a brutal rhythm tone, but it can definitely do it.

Probably didn't help, but that's just my experience.

Yeah, you can do it. Every so often I run my strat through robo-levels of gain. Depending on the amp, it gets real bright though.

I thought metal was a state-of-mind anyway?!

I can play classic metal with my strat just fine. However, I use the middle pickup for my rhythm tones and neck for leads. I pretty much ignore the bridge & middle/bridge positions for that genre on that guitar.
