stratocaster for metal?

Forgot to mention... Its all about eqing the amp differently with singles. Dont use the same settings you use with high output hums. Bring the mids up, and turn down the treble a hair. Maybe even add just a little bass. It will bring the ruthlessness. If you play it, it will rock.

 Missed the "single coil" part of the topic.... Sorry, it's been a long day.

I've never seen him play that guitar before. That's gotta be ancient. He's been using that black Strat he got from Ian Gillan for pretty much the entire time he's been in Maiden.

EDIT: That might be from when he was in Bruce's solo band back in 1990.

Yeah, he also used them with maiden. Check out raising hell.

It cant be done. Everyone knows singles dont do metal.

Even P90's?

P-90's do metal. I have 'em and you can chug with 'em. The whole first System of a Down record Daron used a Strat straight into a Rec.

Exactly. They do metal really well. How can they not? Plug it in, and start riffing away.

Absolutely!!

IMO strats can sound massive with the right amp.. Just listen to the tone Anthony (70sStrathead) gets with his strats thru NMV JMP's!! Monster tone!!

What kind of bands are you talking about? I remember my Vigier sounded great in B tuning with a Duncan Custom in the bridge.

good question, umm....i dunno machine head, children of bodom? probably a dumb question thinking about it

Well if you're playing through a real modern sounding amp then I'm sure a Strat with a humbucker could do those tones.

It can. My Strat with a Rio Grande BBQ is as brutal sounding as you want it to :)

Adam D from Killswitch Engage used a single coil strat in their early stuff with their old vocalist.. He used a SD hotrails if I remember correctly, and their old stuff sounded pretty DAMN good

The Hotrails isn`t a single coil in anything but dimensions, though. I has one in my Strat before I changed the pickguard. It was louder than the BBQ I have in it now, but the BBQ is more balanced while still being able to do Nevermore :D

I've tried it, but I just couldn't hide that "jangly, springy" Strat tone. It sounds good at low volume levels for modern metal, but goes south pretty past at high volume levels. Maybe a non trem hardtail would yield better results.
I put a full sized JB in my HWY One Strat's bridge and it had incredilbly piercing highs and an overall thin tone. Might have more success with a SD Distortion or EMG 85 in the bridge to thicken up the tone.

I run a JB in the bridge of one of my strats and I don't find it bright and piercing or thin for that matter. Its very thick in the mids, but not piercing. It works well for me, nails that classic metal sound with my marshall 2553.
My buddies Strat has a single sized JB jr. in the bridge and it sounds great. Really well balanced. Must differ from guitar to guitar.

Sure you can play metal with a single coil. But for the modern stuff a humbucker sounds a heck of a lot thicker and more focused.

Ask yourself this....what modern band today is using a pure Stat tone for metal? Not many.

Yeah, but his tone is 100% Strat. A Strat through a NMV Marshall is nothing like the modern metal tones that so many bands are using today.

just out of curiosity, has anyone used a singlecoil strat for metal? maiden use them and sound badass, but was wondering who else use them for metal?

I've used a single-coil strat for metal. It works for solo stuff, not so much for rhythm.

Yeah i agree bro, his tone isnt a stereotypical heavy tone OR metal tone... im just saying, Pure strat tones can sound very mean and aggressive when matched with the right setup :)
