Hey guys, So I had this Les Paul studio lite lying arounf I wasn;t playing so I decided to mod it.
Guitar always sounded great but the neck was just not for me used to unfinished Charvel necks.

So I sanded off the finish thinned out the profile some and rounded the edges, feels great now !
Last night I sealed it with a coat of Formby's tung oil.

I have sealed many maple necks with this method and it worked great.

OK, so here is the question. The mahogany has a deeper grain and was thinking of using using a grain filler on the neck to make it feel even smoother, any suggestions ? Also is the Tung oil sufficient enough to seal the mahogany, meaning is it more unstable than maple and should I use something different?

Here are some pics of what it looked like after sanding.

That looks terrific. I would like to do that to my LPC. Charvel uses Brichwood Casey gun stock oil and then Birchwood Casey gunstock wax.

Also: looks like you like sanding things!

It is called "Tru Oil", if you decide to go that route.
I do not think that it will work with the oil that has already soaked in, though. You might need to try to get it out first, but not sure.

That was my next question ? I am going to get the tru oil but don't know if the two coats of tung oil will affect it.

Guess I will let this dry and sand it with 600 then try the tru oil.

Anyone know anything about the gain fillers? thinking this might be worth doing to make things smoother.

I used grain filler putty on my mahogany neck followed by tru oil. Love the result

haha, i think it looks and must feel great like that!

Use acetone to remove the tung oil if you like. I used tung oil on a mahogany warmoth neck and it is still perfect in every way. Ive had it for about 12 years and never a single issue.

Looks great. Ive been tempted to do that to my PRS. Mahogany is more moisture resistant than maple.

I wouldn't use grain filler, but would use the Birchwood Casey stuff.

Tru-oil is Tung oil, just a cleaner version, so don't worry about that.

The gunstock wax is the special sauce. Use it once the tung oil is dry.

Thanks for the replies !

I just picked up some Birchwood Casey tru oil and wax.

Any Idea what grain filler is best ?

Ok, so I put on two coats of the tru oil and it looks great ! I have to say I like the tru oil better than the Formby's tung oil. The true oil seems to fill the grain, I don't see a need for grain filler at this point.

This guitar feels great now ! Love the natural wood feel and the rolled edges.

Next mod will be larger frets, probably 6100's

I'll post some pics when I get her all back together.

Thanks for the help guys !

Here are some pics of the finished neck. Feels awesome ! Thanks for the help !

That turned out really good actually! Nice work

Looks amazing. If I had the courage, would do the same think on my Les Paul as well.

Studios are ok to mod. If it was a custom lite I wouldnt have done it
