Strymon Mobius, TC G-Major, M9... Which One?

I'm thinking about picking up a Mobius. I've been evaluating other systems too like the Line6 M9, Fractal FX8, and TC G-Major II. The Fractal is out of my league, the Mobius is stretching the budget. I used to have an M9. I liked it and thought the effects sounded pretty damned good, but I didn't care for the drive/distortion stomps at all. I've used a couple of Strymon pedals and think they're great though the value seems more in their features because they don't seem to sound necessarily better than other effects processors.

I could stretch my budget for something professional quality for a gigging musician. I've never had any problems with the Line6 stuff I owned, but I don't know if they'd hold up to professional use. The TC G-Major sounds cool, but I have a couple of TC FX such as the Helix and Vortex, but I just don't think they sound that great. Their analog stuff is better. I had a Nova system for a while, but it didn't work that well in front of an amp. The reverbs were pretty much useless through my amp input. The analog drives/distortions are great and probably the best selling point of the unit. If the G-Major and G-System have the same quality effects as the Nova or my Toneprint pedals, then I probably won't like them.

What suggestions would you have for something you'd consider professional quality yet affordable?

`anything can be "professional" quality depending on the professional using it! Navarro uses BOSS pedals, other big time "pros" use BOSS pedals...not a lot of the heavy touring pros use a lot of the boutique stuff we all geek over. Sometimes professional choices mean, REPLACEABLE anywhere on the road, and sound good enough for the people in the audience to have a great time.

I would go for what you can afford that appeals to you! I personally save up a bit more and get the more feature rich, higher quality stuff because I just want that experience. Could i do the same exact thing with a Boss DD-7 over a strymon timeline (that I currently use)? sure...the people in the audience don't know the difference, to them a delay is a delay, and "ooh cool, listen to that echo!" kind of thing.

to the gear nerds, well its about nerding out over gear. Don't get caught up in that if you don't want to.

I would say try out a few things from places that have a good return policy, find what you like and enjoy using it.

Dude I'm going to be honest with you and tell you it was your board that got me thinking about Strymon. I really like your effects. You use a heavier delay than I would, but somehow your delay doesn't seem to interfere too much. I'm using a TC Helix, TC Vortex and Diamond Memory Lane Jr. and want to replace them all because I don't really like the TC Toneprint pedals that much, and the Memory Lane Jr. is noisy. What suggestions might you have? Can you really get the same quality of effects with BOSS pedals as you do with your Friedman pedalboard?

As stated above, Boss pedals are on more touring rigs than probably any other brand. They work and aren't going to break the bank. I'd bet that the DD-3 is on more pro boards than any other delay pedal. Lol! Don't over look the Digitech Hardwire series either. Their DL-8 is a killer delay pedal. My understanding is that the DL-8'uses the old Lexicon PCM algorithms.

I'd recommend the Strymon. Timeline and Mobius are on my board. Only gripe with the Mobius is you can only have one effect on at a time. But I'd agree with Reza a Boss DD pedal will get you plenty close enough to make the crowd go "Oooh echo thingy". Mobius is amazing, can't recommend it enough. Eventide H9's look/sound killer too, I don't have any experience with them.

I don't gig professionally. What I mean was professional-grade because I just hate buying gear that fails. This past year my Presonus Blue Tube died (no wasn't the tube, just bad circuitry), my Maxon AD-9 died, one of my potentiometers mysteriously just died, and I had a Seymour Duncan single sized humbucker which basically fell apart because they're held together by epoxy. These kinds of things piss me off. I want reliable shit.

I recently got a G Major 2 and I have no regrets. Got it off Reverb for around $300. The effects are great. I am using a Voodoo Labs Ground Control and GCX (that I also got off Reverb). I am way happy with my setup right now.

Even expensive shit breaks. You just get more pissed off when it does. Lol. If you really want the Strymon stuff, by all means get it. Just understand that you and maybe one other person in the audience will actually hear the difference. I've got cheap gear, and I have expensive gear. It's all about what works for you.

I love the Möbius! Have them on my main board and my smaller board that I use with the mini-Jube. Great pedal with lots in it!
