hey guys,
I am looking to buy a pair of studio monitors to use for home recording. Whats a good pair that will be suitable for this purpose. Nothing expensive or anything thats gonna put a hole in my pocket.

I was thinking of going with a pair of used KRKs.

any advice is good.

Thanks

I really like my yorkville YSM1i's.

I seem to see KRK's get recommended all the time, but the yorkville's used to be the budget studio monitor recommendation on HC...

The powered ones are the YSM1p's. I have a hafler amp I use to power mine. They look to be about the sound price as the KRK's you linked to...

oh by the way.. When they say they're powered, does that mean they dont require a Poweramp?

Thanks

I like the KRK V series, the Rocket series are alright, though honestly with a budget of 500 bucks, you won't be able to get some really accurate killer monitors anyway, perhaps picking up a used dynaudios or KRK V series might help.

maybe look into an adam A5, or JBL LSR2328P as well

When it says thier powered, means that you don't need a separate power amp. A good thing for your budget. If they are passive, then you will need to buy an additional amp to power them.

If you can, take a cd your are familiar with and go listen to some. though honestly, its hard to get a good stereo image how they usually are setup in a store front.

Those Yorkville YSMs are a great bang for the buck. I use Tannoy Reveal monitors and I luv'em. I would take the YSM over the KRK any day.

Thanks for the info so far guys.

My other question.. is a subwoffer a recommended thing to have in a home studio? or something thats not really needed?

I don't think you necessarily need a sub woofer, depending on what kind of monitors you get and how much low end they have. If you find you are missing the mark in your bass levels, then perhaps adding one might be an idea later, and if you are doing 5.1 mixes, nice to have a sub
