Getting the Quilter 101 mini.

Dont know much about it but im looking to get a pedal to run through it. Something that does high gain metal.

Considering the Revv G3 and Mooer.

Was originally looking for a preamp pedal but I was advised a distortion pedal is what id need with the Quilter. Tbh idk much about any of them, thought they were the same thing but idk.

A preamp pedal plugs into the effects return, bypassing the amps preamp. This often provides a more satisfying tone, but the trade off is you lose your amps clean channel in the process.

Mesa V Twin ? There’s a video out there somewhere of Ola’s “Backup rig”, it’s a Fortin modded V Twin into a Rocktron Velocity 300, and it’s heavy as fuck.

I really like the sound of that MXR. The BE wasnt doing it for me from that video. Looking for more of the modern "brutal" tones. Could always add a boost as well.

I may need to research more on the preamp pedal vs distortion pedal thing. So far the Revv G3 is the best I've heard but for the used price I would probably opt for the 5150 instead.

The BE-OD can get way heavier than that video. He was just going for basic JCM 800 high gain levels.

I just got the Diezel VH4 preamp pedal. It's a modern voiced high gain beast.

Check out some of James Brown's pedals. Tightmetal, etc. He makes quite few these days. I had a Tightmetal before I had any high gain heads, and it was pretty awesome and brutal for a pedal.

Are there any of these that you guys find "amp like"?

I have been watching videos and a lot of them have the "that is a pedal" type of sound. I mean yeah obviously these are not tube amps but I am curious which ones sound the most realistic.

So, I'll probably get flamed, but I'm a huge fan of the DOD Gunslinger. It has taken care of my nostalgia that I miss from my mid '80's RAT, and does a great "modded Marshall in a box" impression. I generally set it to a moderately high gain, then put a boost in front of it if I want a bit more saturation. I does very well going into a clean amplifier, and it stays tight without sounding like a Metal Zone.

For $30, you cannot go wrong with it.

Open to all suggestions TBH.

It should be here tomorrow and I will just test it out with my boost pedals and see what happens

I also have the Gunslinger (two actually) and really like it. I had it side by side with the Dirty Shirley pedal and then sold the DS. I set it for a heavy rock-ish tone and then boost it if needed. I really like it for lead stuff. My R2 is still my main pedal though.

And here's a Friedman BE-OD through a Quilter...

I know that dude!

Yeah this thing has a ton more gain on it. I’ll definitely be doing a vid of the DP-OD (2 channel version) when it comes out.

The VH4 pedal is killer. I may grab the new Herbert one. It’s been calling to me...

JHS Andy Timmons boosted... one of my main pedal platform tones, sounds thick and meaty like an amp

Oh damn, I didn't know they had that. Very interested.

Sounds nice, will check it out. Edit - WOW!! I do love that tone. This will be a contender thanks for posting.

The biggest issue for me is not even a big deal. Since this will not be like a serious thing, just a grab and go pedal board/amp. Does not need to sound amazing but most of the videos I hear (even the VH4 pedal) have this very distinct, yup, that is a pedal sound to them   not the end of the world but I want something very amp like and brutal tones. I do not expect a quilter and a pedal to sound like a $3,500 tube amp but you know what I mean.

The ISP Theta and Blackstar HT are sounding good too.

Bogner Red
Honestly that pedal is a staple on my board.

It's super versatile, sounds great with all guitars, takes other pedals (stacks) in front of it very well, records direct fantastic, sounds insane with eq post, and has a built in boost.

Another vote for the be-od as well
It does basically all the stuff the Bogner red doesnt (higher gain and compression)

You gotta run the VH4 straight into the power amp. Otherwise you get that distortion pedal sound and feel when run through the clean channel. Through a SS poweramp though, I'm not sure what it would sound like. Likely not as good as a tube poweramp.
