This is my first post on here so hopefully I'm in the right place.. Anyways, I want to get a new boost pedal and this Suhr Koko Boost has really caught my attention. I play a lot of modern progressive metal type stuff (Periphery, Monuments, TesseracT, Erra, etc..) and the "Mid Boost" features of the Koko Boost are what I'm most curious about. I've posted on other forums (sevenstring, gearslutz, got-djent) and it seems that the Koko Boost is pretty unheard of in my realm of metal. I'm all about trying new things though. And based on it's specs/description, it seems like a pretty ideal fit too. Unfortunately, I just can't seem to find a real quality review/demo of it. Especially in a "metal" context.

So it has your standard Clean Boost knob, but it also has an additional Mid Boost knob. The Koko Boost RELOADED model also features a Mid Q knob as well. And both pedals have a Mid switch that selects what frequency range you're boosting (mid, lo-mid, hi-mid). To my knowledge, the Reloaded is also supposed to be a revised/improved version of the Koko Boost. Nonetheless, I'm interested in all things Koko Boost and would love to get as much insight on the matter as I can get.

Has anyone played through one of these before? How effective is the Mid Boost knob/switch?

Thanks!

Not quite progressive metal stuff but @rockinchippy (same user name on YouTube) has played this pedal & has some metal demos.
How are you hoping to use the pedal? As your main dirt/rhythm pedal or as a lead boost with a tube amp??

The regular Koko boost is not so clean. It adds gain with hair on it.
Is the reloaded version boost the same idea? I am not sure it is out yet.

I have one
I don't use it much because I don't play much metal anymore, but used it all the time with metal amps on the low-mid setting. Contrary to tubescreamer type pedals, it doesn't suck all your low-end away

This except I still play metal!!! It is a great pedal (original model), but I do not use it much since I have the Gower KK++ which does not need a boost pedal unless you are on the lower gain mode. I use it with the Atomica primarily and on the low-mid setting.

I used it with an Uberschall
The amp definitely doesn't "need" a boost either, but backing up on the gain and adding a boost just gives a different flavor than full-on preamp gain

It's pretty dang versatile, it all depends on where you set your gain on the amp. And I agree it doesn't suck the low end out that's why I really like it.

I love it with my recto for metal tones... but I have to be careful to dial the amp for the pedal what with the oversized cab or the lows can get a little overwhelming.

It really is an awesome pedal.

(The original, I have no experience with the reloaded version)

Sorry, should've included a link on my post. The Reloaded is out, and it looks real tempting.

According to the makers, it's supposed to have refined whatever they saw flaws in the first one. And although I can't imagine it being that drastic. A subtle improvement is still an improvement nonetheless.

And I'll be using this in front of a Laney IRT Studio, and possibly a Pod HD Pro if they cooperate. I pretty much am hoping for it to be kinda like a cleaner OD boost, but with enchanted tonal possibilities with all the mid frequency wizardry.

Does anyone have experience with both the Koko and a TS808/OD808/GreenRhino-type pedals?
And thanks everyone for the replies. Rig-Talk definitely seems to be more responsive than the other forums I've tried.

Koko Boost seems to have a loyal customer base. Anyone else have experience with them?

I have both a Koko Boost and an OD808... I haven't stacked them, yet. I just redid my pedal board and set it up that way, but haven't played yet.

I'm more so looking at purchasing one or the other (koko or od808) as opposed to stacking them. I'd run them similarly, as mainly a clean boost w/ tone-tweaking. If I'd use the od808, I'd be using it with the drive at 0. You know how they compare when running them individually as boosts? I'm familiar with the od808. So if the Koko can reproduce the same quality of sound, while having better tone options with its Mid Boost, then I'd probably purchase the Koko.

The Koko produces a different kind of boost... it's got a little grit but not much... but the tone is very different.

The OD808 boosts the mids and cuts the lows a bit, whereas the Kokoboost boosts EVERYTHING. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your amp and the sound you're looking for.

This is speaking entirely about the original Kokoboost, not the reloaded version. The original has that mid boost, but it is seperate from the overall boost.

If you're after the typical TS9/TS808 -> Recto/5150 metal tone... that's not what I get out of my Kokoboost. It is a really cool metal tone imo, but it isn't that tone.

Check my assessment on one of the other threads...viewtopic.php?f=3&t=153189&p=1788441#p1788441

This pedal is transparent and takes nothing away from your tone or your amp's true voice..it adds only that which we all seek...true clean amplifier front end push..it helps your amp do what you want it to..the mid boost will find that lead tone voice..fat punchy low mid..punchy mid cut..or searing upper mid grind....there are a couple vids up on youtube..just search for koko boost reloaded..I may put one up but a phone vid just won't do it justice....it made my block letter crunch channel as good as the lead channel!

I goose the front end of my VH4 with the KoKo and wow!!!!! I did stack the KoKo and an SD1 on channel 2 of the 4 and is freakishly good. I have to be honest....I really do not know what the hell it does but it does it well. A fixture in my board for 2 years plus and not going anywhere.

So to finally get to the point. YES!!!!! for metal absolutely  !
