I'm between these three guitars at the moment for my next axe, but would consider others as well. Basically I'm looking for a doublecut with a tremolo that can cover ground that my LP Custom can't, while still getting a big beefy rhythm tone. I'd be curious to hear from those of you who have had experience any of these guitars, as I most likely won't be able to demo 2 out of 3 of them. Btw, I play in a hard rock/prog band...sort of like Alice in Chains/Tool meets something more spacey and Floyd-ish.

Thanks.

I hate PRS's so I'm biased. Between the JP6 or Suhr Modern I'd personally go with the Suhr Modern since I love Suhr pickups and have been impressed with their guitars. The JP6 never really looked that impressive to me plus I don't think I'd like the crunch lab pickup. EBMM however are top notch guitars so I don't think you'd go wrong with either

Like 5150GSX I couldn't stand PRS, that was until the Singlecuts, and notably the SC245's. I have no experience with the tremolo system so I can't help you there, but the Singlecuts are great guitars in my opinion. My SC245 is deadly.

The EBMM Petrucci is a nice guitar but I actually prefer the Luke. The Luke has a dead on tremolo system, great tone, and one of the best feeling necks out there. YMMV. There's just something about that guitar that I bond with, and I think it would suit the style you're talking about.

No expereince with the Suhr's.

Hope this is somewhat helpful. Good luck!

I own a JP6 and love it. I would, however, love to own a Suhr Modern. I think Ernie Ball makes some of the best and highest quality production line guitars available. An Ernie Ball BFR might be what you are looking for but they are pricey. For a similar cost you can get a custom made guitar from Suhr. That being said, I would own a BFR Petrucci easy. I have an original JP6 and it is my #1 guitar. I doubt I would ever sell it. It feel great in my hands.

I have a LP, PRS SC (non trem) and a Suhr Modern. The PRS is a great sounding great playing axe....the Suhr Modern is the clear winner for me. By far the best guitar I've ever played or owned :)

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Mark, that is a beautiful axe!...There's so many options from Suhr, it's hard to get it all figured out...but, of course that's a good problem to have. It's probably the front-runner for me right now...

I have a feeling I wouldn't like the PRS as much as the other two...something about them just seem to be neither here nor there...but, I will have the opportunity to at least demo that one locally.

Part of the reason I'm attracted to the JP6 is the piezo...that's a nice option for sure...

Give John or Ed a call, I'm sure if they are able to work in a piezo system they would do it :)
The quality and customer service is first class all the way!

I have JP6 and I have Suhr Pro S3. I have also tested PRS guitars a lot, because I really wanted one, but couldn't bond with them.
I really like my JP6, but I would definitely go for a mahogany Suhr Modern when looking for more LP-esque tone

The Suhr Modern is very different than the other two. It's super lightweight and has a very woody feel to it. It's very unique in the way the entire guitar resonates. The strings ring loudly. As light as it is, it sounds great. Mine has a very alive feel to it.

Three very different and very awesome axes. I love my PRS, and would love to try a Suhr. I also owned a JP6 awhile back and it was a great guitar as well. Had to go wrong with any of them really.

I've had both a CU24 and a JP6 and I loved the JP6, but the neck was too thin for me. In the end that was something I could not get around. They are wonderfully versatile, especially for a multi-amp setup. The trem stayed in tune 95% of the time once everything was settled properly. The peizo system worked flawlessly, especially when paired with a separate amp. If you like really thin & slim necks, you'll love it. I never bonded with the CU24's, have had 2 of them, but never could get enough meat out of them. I did not feel they were "lesterish" at all. The McCartys were a different story altogether once I changed the bridge pups out, and for me at least the neck carve was perfect. I would go with the Suhr between these even having never owned one

Well
I used owe all kind of JP6,such as JP6,JPX,JPXI,JP6 BFR
I think the most different is the body wood
The common jp6 has a basswood body and this one has the most closely sounds to john when I plug it into my mesa boogies
The JP6 BFR has the highest quality sound then the other JP
And the Jp bfR is better than my prs custom 24 10 top

The suhr is amazing.amazing wood, amazing PU
Quite clean and smooth
The ADL PU has a lot of fun when you are doing high gain

I haven't owned a Suhr being left handed and they just are rare to find.... I have however owned a normal JP6... a BFR model, and currently still have my trusty Custom 22... the playability on the JP6 guitars is seriously second to none... you can literally crank the strings down to where they are almost laying on the frets, if you are into that sorta thing anyway, I only mention is because in my opinion it's a huge nod to how well they are constructed...

Anyhow, for rhythm tones... personally I think the PRS will give you the best rhythm tones... but for leads and playability and features... the JP6's are going to slightly edge out the PRS...

Just a couple of my opinions... good luck on your search!

I have owned all of these guitars. The JP was my number one for a short while, mainly because of the piezo and versatility. However, I sold the JP after a while. I would consider owning one again. I still own my CU24, use it mostly for drop D tunings. It would not be my #1, yet is excellent.

Now, the Suhr modern is just a notch above. I bought one, then bought a standard, then another modern. They are THE sweetest guitars!

My modern has been my #1 for the last couple of years now, and I haven't been gassing for any guitars since I started using the Suhr's. I did buy an Explorer for the Scorpions tribute I am playing with now, but not because I wanted something else. I also had the Explorer customer out to make it "playable" from my perspective...also paint like Matthias'.

Anyway, a custom Suhr is pricey, however you will have a guitar that YOU picked out and works for YOU. That's a big deal.

Did you guys see how old the original post was??  I imagine he made a choice by now! :D

Too funny...I totally didn't notice

Old thread but funny how this video compares each one. The JP does have a VERY thin neck.
