another pickup adjustment thread...been endlessly fiddling with the balance with my SSH+ height on my Modern and found that further back sounds the best...starts opening up and woody sounding at around 3/16ths without pressing the string down last fret. The specs say around 1/16 pressing down last fret but at this height they sound way to compressed/hot and no air to the sound. What do you suhr guys run your pickups at????

Never felt the need to mess with mine. Try asking over at the Suhr forum

I've found that any pickup sounds more natural & organic the further away it is from the strings. Less pull, less power etc.

I like it back a bit further than 1/16th, probably around 3/16th like you. I think it sounds better that way. but damn, the ssh+ is an awesome sounding/feeling pickup!!!

yup...always had my pickup close thinking they should be there...giving the best signal to noise ratio, gain...blah blah. Then realized with better technique and actually listening with my ears they sounded way better further away...you lose some gain and compression but now more open, sustain, airey woody sound and no harshness...more dynamics. If you look closely at all the people with great tone have their pups pretty well low for example Les Paul players like Bonamassa, Moore, Page etc... all have/had their pups pretty well close to flush with the pickup rings. That is well lower than the 1/16th spec for humbuckers that Gibson and everyone else put out. I would really be interested in a lot of pro players setups...
