So I have a Splawn Quick Rod that I really dig the dirty tones of, but for what I'm after, the clean tones leave a bit to be desired. I know the PT100 sounds fantastic clean, I love the mid-gain tones and the MIDI option is super handy. I stumbled across this video of Mark Day using an older CAA PT100 and LOVE the high gain tones (even more than the OD100 SE+). My question though is that I read that the amp has been re-voiced a bit since the older CAA version. To you guys that have one, can I still get these types of tones out of it...or did the revoicing tame it a bit and give it a saggier response?

You might be thinking of the newer PT100 Signature....it was slightly revoiced. The original wasn't as far as I know. They have a negative feedback control that allows you to add more sag if desired.

That's what I'm asking, I may not have worded it well. I'm curious if the new Suhr branded PT100's can still do the higher gain tones that the older CAA version was doing in the video.

The older CAA PT100 is more aggressive. The new Suhr PT100 is more mellow, more classic rock. Not as angry sounding. I like the older PT100 OG version better.

I had an original for about six months. The clean channel sounds even better live than in that clip. The gain channel had some weird mid frequencies I just couldn't gel with though. You don't hear too much in that clip - maybe it was just mine.

Out of curiosity, what speakers were you using?

Tried greenies and V30...just couldn't get along with that amp no matter how hard I tried. It might be just what you are looking for though

It wasn't just yours. I couldn't get rid of that amp fast enough. Distortion had a grainy shit sound. Amp was so much bass. A 60 lb boat anchor.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Hmm, I have some things to think about it seems. As a general rule I tend to set my gain fairly conservatively and then slam the hell out of the front end with an overdrive, so I'm curious how much of the graininess would come through with the added compression hitting the front end. I may just have to keep an eye out for a used one at the right price so if it's not for me I can flip it pretty easily.

It doesn't help...I tried that thinking I could cover up the irritating friequencies. The grainy gain structure was still there to.

Most of the grainy tone is all the Chinese preamp tubes. I tried them in my Classic + and I couldnt them out fast enough. Needs a little blend of a JJ, EH's and an LPS, much bettter

Hit it with a Koko boost on channel 2 and enjoy.

How would you recommend placing the JJ, EH in V1, V2, etc?

Btw - I've gotten lots of compliments on my tone using the sig PT100 from sound guys and other guitar players the past few months playing originals in the styles of AIC, TOOL, Clutch, SOAD, etc.
I did wish it had a bit more upper mids. I also owned the first PT100 version and didn't like it as much as the newer fwiw.

Ok first off if your happy with your tone leave it. I scoured thru Suhr's forum for info on my Classic+ which is not anywhere near as gainy as the PT but has the same clean channel. Here's what I found:

PT100:
V1-6 and All Chinese

Classic +:
V1 JJ
V2-6 Chinese

Than there was a post where John mentioned taming the Crunch channel a bit on the CL+:
V1 JJ
V2 Chinese
V3 JJ
V4-6 Chinese

I have tried all these and other configs. I sub'd EH's for the Chinese ( smoother all around with EH's ) and I always run a LPS in the Pi position. Right now my CL+ has:

V1 JJ
V2-5 Ruby HG5's
V6 LPS

Definitely the best combo for my amp and ears. I will say these amps will show you how different tubes sound in the different positions so give it a try if you want to mix things up a bit..

PT100 SE is a bit tamer than the CAA versions. I had a CAA PT50 that was ridiculous in yo face
