Hi

I am just wondering if this amp is capable of getting some good old 80's / 90's thrash sounds, Anthrax, Megadeth, Overkill etc, either with or without a boost, also same question with the Friedman JJ.
I have played them both and they are both great amps and certainly can do the clean and hard rock sounds in spades but can it get decent thrash sounds, they certainly have more gain than a JCM800 boosted but is the voicing right.

Thanks
Steve

Definitely with an eq in the loop.

I really liked my Suhr PT100. One of the best modified Marshall 2203 sounds around.

Cannot say anything about the PT but I own the JJ. It is based on a plexi instead of an 800, but to be honest I don't care because it has the sound I was looking for.

It cannot be scooped as much as the Mesa Mark sound used on Master of Puppets without an EQ, but I would say it is generally very well suited for 80s thrash. It has a very clear and defined sound and stays tight even with the gain on 10. Sounds awesome.

It can also sound more modern than an 800 when in JBE mode.

This is a very good representation of the sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y31k_JROejA

I didn't own a PT, but I had the SE and I would say it's not quite the sound that you're looking for. While it is based on a Marshall, it doesn't have the grind that the Marshall has. It's also not as squishy, it was very/too tight. (that might be different on the PT). It certainly has it's upside, amazing clean channel and open chord note definition is glorious, but ultimately, they are hard rock lead amps, not unlike the Carvin Legacy, if that makes sense.

If I were in your shoes, I would look at the Splawn's if that is what you are looking for, just listen to any of the new Overkill releases, or find an old 800. You will save money and have the exact sound that you're going for.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried a Splawn and I liked it but from memory not to keen on the clean channel.
I was looking into the Gower but the old JCM800 really hold there price in the UK, I thought I could get one cheap but not the case, when you look at the mod sheet you keep thinking I will need that oh and that then cost goes very high very quickly.

Yes for the Suhr, speaking as an owner - ch 3, on-board boost on, presence and feedback knobs at 3/4.
FYI I'm biased as I'm selling one but it's a great amp. Tons of grind, as much OD as you could want, very tweakable, and a legendary clean channel.
