Suhr vs Ibanez J-Custom

Neither. When you get to guitars in this quality range i think it comes down mostly to personal preference. Some guys hate Ibanez necks so anything that resembles a wizard neck is going to be hated.

Ivan, Robotechnology, has a J-Custom and i thought it was an excellent guitar, pretty much flawless. Of course Suhr's are top notch.

I'd agree. Once you get to a certain price point you get the good stuff and it comes down to what you personally prefer. In all honesty I'm not good/picky enough to tell much difference between a $3500 Fender custom shop Tele and my $550 Benford, so maybe I'm not the best judge.

Agreed, at that price range the user has to decide what works for him.

Different body contours
Different trems
Different necks
SS vs trad fret wire

I'm an almost satisfied J custom owner (see my thread ). Fretwork is impeccable, and its the most comfortable guitar I've ever played. This might not be the same for you, depends on how much you like the RG body shape and wizard neck

Played two killer J-Customs and some great Suhrs but Anderson is the first place I'd look when talking this price range. That said, it's all personal preferance.

Exactly. I've seen/tested few J-Customs and they've all been flawless when it comes to finishing. Fretwork, inlays, wooden binding on the neck etc. have been immensely well done. Action has varied from super low to higher so I dunno how even the fretwork was on the higher action ones but the frets looked damn well done. I don't like super low action guitars because I pick quite heavily when playing rhythm and I hate buzz which is caused by too low action so that didn't bother me.

Woods on the other hand might look good but sound like shit but I think I've heard that Suhr inspects their wood for sound qualities before choosing which neck to put on which body. Daniel, was it you or Steve who had a Suhr which sounded very bad?

"Sounded bad" is a strange way of saying it. Let's just say it didn't sound how i liked. The Suhr that Steve had was chambered and imo it had an open mellow tone. Probably not the best choice for harder rock and metal tones. It was a limited edition and super expensive so i was taken back by how much i didn't dig it, but I'll pass it off as something that i just didn't like where someone else might love it.

Steve's other Suhr is pretty badass though, the black quilt one loaded with the FLoyd! That one is a pretty serious shredder.

The Anderson I had was hollow/chambered. It was very mellow and lacked punch. Great for some styles I guess, but it weirded me out because it still looked like a strat-shaped solidbody, but the tone is changed so much...

That is the big problem, no matter the flame, quilt, origin of the wood, etc is going to promise an outstanding guitar and nothing will change my mind. Labels have nothing to do with the end result and even the best builders in the world can save a dead piece of tone wood. I was so close to ordering a CS Jackson with a Charvel type neck but I backed off because I did not want to chance getting a dull sounding guitar for that type of coin.

Here is JC fretwork though, pretty damn nice.

Exactly! All the J-Customs I've seen have had that kind of a fret finishing (polishing, rounded ends), binding finishing, inlaywork etc. Amazing guitars...

Have him build me a JC for a good price and I'll take one, the Ibanez cloners are a fucked up bunch so we can use a good one :D
