Hey TGPers,

I'm missing a Super Strat in my guitar collection.
I've had a PRS Custom 24, a couple of G&L Legacy guitars, and an Ibanez RG2550, that served as my longer scale, whammy bar guitars. They are long gone.

I'm ready to make a purchase. I'm looking at several models, trying to keep it at or less than $1000, with a couple of exceptions:

Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder
Charvel San Dimas or So Cal
Ibanez RG550
ESP LTD Lynch models
Kramer Pacer Vintage
Dave Murray Sig Fender
Nash s81
ESP Horizon
PRS CE24
Suhr Classic Pro HSS
Fender Professional HSS

The guitar will be used for pretty cleans, bluesy and classic rock stuff, and metally stuff or leads with non-drastic whammy bar antics.

I would prefer a maple or ebony fretboard, with jumbo or med jumbo frets.
I want a dependable trem that stays in tune and isn't a pain to setup with every string change.
I want a neck that isn't tiny and terribly thin, but still easy to fly around on.
I want good tone woods and quality.
I want the ability to have single coil neck or neck/mid sounds with humbucker bridge sounds.
I am willing to trade my LP Classic for $800-1000 towards said guitar.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hey TGPers
TGPers????

  :gethim:

That would normally go with a "Trying to keep under $3,000, and MUST BE MADE IN USA". Probably got banned over there for his budget, and possible interest in an LTD.

I think I'm at the point where if I ever want another Strat, I'm just going to get a real Fender Strat. I've tried to get a G&L, Squier, and other alternatives in the past and end up wishing I got a Fender Strat.

For harder stuff though, a Charvel is my go-to. For clean, blues, and some lead stuff, I'd get a Fender. Just my two cents though.

Charvel USAs for me. There are 2 SoCals on GC.com for a little over 1K. White and Pagan gold.

LOL! You're probably right!  As long as there's no tan pants involved... :D

In all seriousness, though, out of that list, I'd be looking at Charvel. Personally, I don't think Floyds are difficult to setup maintain or maintain.

I think so, too. I'm not a Fender guy, but a good Strat is a good Strat, and even with a single coil at the bridge, they can do a lot and stay in tune. With a humbucker at the bridge, maybe not technically a "Super Strat," but pretty darn close.

This is the one you want. 1982 beak, all original other than the brass block I put on the OFR.

1982? Thought the full fledged double-locking OFR didn't go on a Kramer until 1984?

Hard to tell.. Does it have fine tuners? I believe the Rockringer was used to mid-82, then came the Floyd Rose. 1st Floyd's had no fine tuners and came on the import guitars/lower priced. I don't think they went on any Kramer until '83-'84.

Like I said, I can't tell. What model is it, Pacer? How much you want for it?

I meant a big brass block. New one is at least twice as thick as the stock one. I have them in all my FR guitars except for my Axis Tribute, which comes with a pretty beefy one anyway.

The new 2016 2017 Charvel San Dimas MIM guitars are very nice quality-wise for the money at 600-700 used. The Alder body on mine is very resonant and the neck feels great not too thin not too thick, seems to be more a D profile. I am partial to nice round C shape profile but I find the Charvel neck comfortable and playable. It has the Korean Floyd but I don't feel the need to replace it with an OFR, it stays in tune great. It does fit your Superstrat requirement and you can pocket the other 400 bucks.

I did have issues tuning it up as a floating trem for some reason(Any other San Dimas owners have this issue?) so I reinstalled the trem stop that the previous owner installed(maybe for a reason) anyway as I like to drop D every now and then so it was no big deal for me. Maybe I have forgotten how to bring a floating floyd to pitch initially to lock it down for fine tuning but it really fought me. Tuning is rock solid with the trem stop. I guess some guys have been changing out the saddles for OFR saddles on the Korean trems to improve them. I have all my floyds to dive only but I don't remember having initial setup tuning issues when my old Kramer floated...

I only buy used. I highly recommend a USA Washburn mg. About 500 and great guitars. I have 3.Duncan's, Schaller Floyd and a nice c neck.

I have had a few MGs, they are a great value used. Grover Jackson designed when he consulted with Washburn.

They are really close in feel to some of the Hamers. I have a chap that has almost the same neck profile. But i heard some Hamer guys also went to Washburn around that time.

i have one that is stamped Namm in the neck pocket. mahogany body, thick quilted top , 2 humbuckers, ebony board and ready.............. tom bridge. never saw another one other than the one in the catalog.

Speaking of Steve Stevens, I was going to recommend a Washburn SS40 if you can find one...they are the Korean made versions of the SS80. Poplar body (a poor man's Korina), and great necks. They resonate like crazy. They pop up from time to time on Reverb for $400. Plop some new pickups and a good Floyd and you've got a really nice, solid guitar.
