Ok, so I’ve had a few days to sink my teeth into the T.C. Electronic Nova System (NS). At first, it took some adjustment in the way I approach putting together patches. The menus locations and features are not the same as my G-Major. After reading the manual a few times, I was able to start wrapping my head around the way the NS would fit into my setup.

I am using the NS in the Effects Loop of my TriAmp Mk I. I use it in preset mode, so that I can use the MIDI on the NS to change the channels on my amp. Even in the Preset mode you have access to a few of the effects to turn on and off like pedals. I have core patches that I know I will use most often with a few extra “colors” to be able to turn and off at will within the preset. This works really great, and adds a bit of flexibility to the system. Someone asked me in another thread if you could bypass the NS. Well, you would have to switch off your amp’s effects loop, as the NS doesn’t have a “Bypass” switch.

The effects on the NS are top notch. I’m sure that someone with an Eventide Eclipse will find something to call lackluster, but I’m very pleased with the sound quality of the effects. They are much cleaner than the G-Major. The boost feature is a cool bonus. The ability to adjust tap tempo is pretty cool as well. I plan to add an expression pedal to my board soon to control CC values.

At any rate, I am very happy with the Nova System. It has really allowed me to remove most of the pedals on my board- which creates a much cleaner system. It also gives me the effects that I like to use in a high quality package that is pretty straight forward. Here are a few pictures on the new gig setup. And I threw in an older picture of how my pedal board used to look like. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to try and answer them.

How are you switching channels on the amp? Can the NS be used as a midi controller?

The NS has a MIDI in/Out/Through on the back. So you an send MIDI out to another device.

It would be cool if they had an output for just the OD/Dist section so that way you could run it in front and then use the other effects in the loop. Or do they?

I got to mess around with a NS unit through an Einstine for a while and seems like a pretty damn cool set up. Has all the effects I use on a regular basis except for univibe (which is probably in there I just couldn't find it). Like the last poster asked...can you run the 4 cable method with it? That would be ideal? Eitherway...cool set up and alot nicer looking than with that huge MK1 footswitch! lol Congrats!

Unfortunately, you can'y run the NS with the four cable method. I'm betting that when they eventually come out with the NS2 that this will be a feature. If I want some killer OD/Distortion before the amp, I can always put my Bixonic Expandora back on the board. Which I might do anyway because I love how that pedal works with my amp. However, I have more gain options on tap with just the amp than I really use.

Hey Brad, what's the word on the new amp? And yes, there is a univibe setting. That was a major selling point for me.

Nah, no word yet. Just sold the Egnater TM 4212 and am sitting on a grand trying to decide what I want. Just real nervous about having another amp shipped to me with the bad luck I've had in the past.

I don't mean to seem dense, but your saying the NS can send out midi commands i.e act as midi foot controller? I remember looking into this when it came out, but I thought I'd still have to use a seperate midi controller for some reason.

Been waiting to try one for a whille.
Thanks for the quick review...hoping the Nova System will replace a lot on my large pedalboard one day.

Yes, the NS has a MIDI output on the back. So I can change the channels on my TriAmp via MIDI. You just have to program the change values into the NS. Works like a charm once you get it set up.

Went by the music store to check the Nova System out, ended up playing it through a Marshall VM for over half an hour.
I like it...a lot!
The drive sounds great to me, not digitalish, the delay and effects sound great too.
Took it home for a week to really test it out...guess we shall see if it's a keeper for me.

Hi nice set up,

I am new to this forum but I was hoping that you would be able to clarify something for me. I have a Hughes and Kettner Triamp MKII and a Nova system and am wanting to setup via midi like you have and switch effects and channels at the touch of one button on the NS. I have heard rumors that the NS is very slow when running in midi with changing presets. Do you have this problem?? I don't want to buy the midi module for my amp if its slow.

your assistance would be greatly appreciated

There is a slight switching lag between the Nova System and the TriAmp channel switching. I will say that the TriAmp will switch channels very quickly via MIDI though. I went back to using a G-Major with my setup. It just works better for what I needed. I send the MIDI out from my old ADA MCP-1 floor controller to the MIDI in on the back of the TriAmp. Then I send the MIDI though the TA's MIDI Through/Out connection to the T.C. G-Major. This means that the TA is the first thing that switches. It's very fast.

With the Nova System, there was a 1/2 second delay between when I hit the Nova's switch to the time my amp switched channels. I think this has more to do with the way T.C. has setup the Nova's switches than it does with the TA's MIDI functions. I would highly recomend the MIDI Module for the TriAmp. It makes the amp even more versatile, and allows a great deal of flexability to how you control the amp. Between channels changes and setting the FX loop on or off it is really nice.

Of course, I'll be more than happy to trade you my Mark I that already has the MIDI module for your Mark II that doesn't... ;)

Cool Thanks for answering that and sharing your experience! Ha... I don't think i will trade you my MKII.... sorry. lol.... It sounds so good!!! I took the plunge and ordered the midi module so i should have it soon. I have never run a system in midi before, so i will see how i like the way it performs. If i like it a lot i might just buy the g-system!! Woo Hoo!!!

I will keep you posted on the out come

Cheers for your help
