NEVER have been a big Marshall fan other than modded ones...Love the way they sound, but I'm just not into boosting amps with pedals, dont ask why, cause I dont know, just doesn't seem right to me for some reason. I did however REALLY like the JVM.

I'm looking at a couple just for giggles, the TSL60, and JCM900 4100. I dont think the TSL would need boosting but the 4100 probably does, although if I like the amp, I'm not against sending it to someone for modding.

Basically, I know shit about Marshalls, other than the late 60s-70s and JCM800s are badass. (according to the interwebz)....

Anyways help me out, looking for something thats a different flavor than the VHT Pitbull 100/cl, but still aggressive and mean sounding. I have never owned a Marshall other than the Valvestate 8100, and would like to try one for the first time ever. :D

Not alot around here in the used market for me to try out either, so I'll be going on youtube clips, and the advice I get here.

If you are not into boosting, the only marshalls I would recommend for the music you play is the JVM and a DSL

It's like you're having a Porsche and looking to Fiats also :D :D :D Just kidding.
Compared to your 100 CL most old Marshalls have less gain, less features etc.
Sound wise I believe that if your 100CL is loaded with EL34, you have those sounds.

TSL not worth a shit?

I really liked the JVM..... need a little more cash, and I could probably pick one up, but thought I'd look into some of the cheaper used models first.

Hmm... interesting. Been thinking about a stereo rig, and thought maybe a Marshall would compliment the VHT, but maybe your right considering the CL is EL34. Just thought it'd be cool to try out a decent Marshall for the first time, that wasn't a loaner. (borrowed a couple Cameron modded Marshalls last year :inlove: ).

Suggestions? Mesa, 5150, ????

I had a JCM 2204, it was pretty generic and it needed a lot of tweaking in order to get a more metal sound (meaning more gain for rhythm and soloing and at the same time tight and focused).
I understand that most modern high gain designs are based on those circuits but since companies like VHT, Diezel, Soldano and Bogner make this stuff better (concerning tone and features) why bother?

Just swapped a TSL for a JVM, I'm actually real happy with the JVM. I dont normally like jet fighter cockpit's, but the JVM is easier to get around than it looks, once you figure out a few things. The clean channel on it is very good, the high gain is tighter, more focused than the TSL, or the DSL. I also like the DSL a lot, it seems to have a little more depth to it's tone, but I was suprised at the JVM. I'm a little gunshy about the complexity of the components, and I dont like stuff directly mounted to pcb boards, but it seems a lot of stuff is going in that direction. My stuff rarely moves anymore, so thats not a huge concern. The JVM is VERY versital , the footswitch is very cool. You can program it to switch things anyway you want, or go midi. If you want to take 1 amp to a gig, its gonna do well. The main thing though, is the tone, and once you get it dailed in, its real good IMO. I have a few marshalls, and they all have thier thing they do really well, but at least for now, I'm keeping the JVM. I'm also keeping my others too! - Jim

I've had:
TSL60
DSL100
JCM800 2204
JCM800 2205
and I've played a while on the TSL100

If it has to be a TSL, I'd go 100. It has more beef to the tone, better effects loop options and still has a decent master. The DSL had a better sounding crunch and a bit fuller tone. I didn't get a lot of high volume playing on that one. The 2204 is the only one that's left - biggest tone, with a simple boost could do all the sounds I could get out of the TSL's. None of these Marshalls are as tight as a 5150 (which my other guitar player uses).

I see TSL100's sell for about $800 around here, which is a fair price IMO. Solid amp, but may be a little disappointing if your benchmark is the VHT.

Juggernaut,

Since I've had my AxeFx my JVM 410H has been covered up in the corner for months. I've decided to sell it. It's mint, no mods and not a scratch. Send me a PM offer if interested. Will ship in original box with all original materials such as manual, cords and footswitch.

i really like the newer JVM (the one with less knobs)

sounds better to me than the original one

I agree with what some others have said, if you won't boost then DSL/TSL or JVM.

Did I miss something????

VHT?

Did you sell the fx???

Boost smoost................you will not need to boost the JVM unless you are playing quieter than the strings on your electric.

Agree, no boost needed with the JVM. I was playing it with stock Strats and getting tons of gain.
JVM channel demo in my sig somewhere.

It wont sound like the VHT either. the VHT has its own voicing.

Yeah....no VHT in that box.

Hell, I have no clue if OD2 still works on my amp since I have no used that channel all year as it is too compressed for my needs.

I've not played the TSL, but as others have said you won't need a boost for the JVM. However, a 900, 800, or anything older and unmodded definitely will if you want heavy tones. Just my $.02, as someone who was until very recently anti-boosting for really no good reason, don't write it off completly. Marshalls boost amazingly well. Pedals don't seem to emasculate or sit on top of the amp's tone like with other amps. I'm off my soapbox :D

Mike,

I gigged in a metal band for years using a DSL 50. Very nice amp IMHO. You can get thrash tones for days out of that thing.. FWIW, I don't care for TSL's nearly as much.

I also REALLY like the JVM. If I were buying a Marshall today, this would be the one.

JCM800's are hit or miss for me and the volume needed to get the gain I want is just too much. Boosting a JCM800 is very nice though. I wouldn't discount using a boost pedal, as I think boosts work in some instances and don't in others.

wait - why come you have a problem boosting? I thought you were a huge old school randall fan?

and boosted (as you well know) those are killer

:) yep, I dont know what my problem is with having a pedal pushing the front of an amp, I have done it, I just prefer not to, With my Randalls I alsways used an EQ in the loop and that was it.

Thanks guys, I've just never owned a "real" Marshall before and was thinking it would be cool to finally try one out, and thought it might compliment the CL or give me another tone to play around with. I'd REALLY like to get a JVM cause I've played them and know I liked it.

Yes I got out of the AxeFX for now, just a short LOA from it, I'm gonna pick up an ULTRA in January and I'm putting together a rig to showcase the HBE stuff, and also thought it'd be fun to try some stuff I haven't tried before or revisit some older tones I haven't played with in a while.
