DSL 50 and 100. used prices these days? ive been thinking that i need to try one. i have played one, once, for a short period of time, and dialed in a tone and stuck with it (recording a 3-4 song demo). personally, i love the Marshall tone. basically all my favorite tones came from Marshall amps, either modded or boosted 800's, and from what ive seen the DSLs can get there, but can do a lot more.

so, is this an amp worth plopping some money down on and checking out, or should i look somewhere else. if its worth it, anyone have a line on one? ive been searching but i havent found much yet. havent searched a lot however so i might have missed a good deal.

i figured ive had a 5150, i tried a Recto, i have my Ultra Plus (which is going to stay!), and i want to get a 5150 II, and a backup Ultra Plus, but i really want to give a Marshall a try. cant hurt, right?

I LOVE my DSL!!! That amp will never leave especially since they dont hardly bring any money these days which im perplexed by!

Gary Moore, One Night In Dublin a Tribute to Phil Lynott. Whole concert is on Youtube and from what I read he uses DSLs for everything...really fantastic sound

I had a DSL a few years back and always would get comments from other musicians about my tone. My ears might be dysfunctional but I hear a lot of the old DSL in my eVh 50w......

I just bought a DSL 100 last weekend. Been diggin it. Great amp and cheap! Almost too good to be true. I have a few amps now after a few years. The DSL is going to be a keeper. It goes well with other amps as a core tone. So far I have found it plays well with the OCD. will be trying out some other pedals in the future.

I had a DSL 50 for about a year and my biggest gripes are the bass level discrepency between the clean and dirty channels and the crappy loop. I see them going between $5-750 and are a good "bang for the buck" amp, but put it up against an 800 and you'll lose everytime.

thanks for the info guys. im going to look up the Gary Moore stuff on youtube and see how it sounds.

TX6strings...good info on the bass discrepancy. not a big deal to me, im really looking for that Marshall distortion tone anyway! and i know that an 800 would probably kill the DSLs, but 800s are expensive, and there is no guarantee youll find a good one! i remember playing one WAY back when i was a kid and thinking "this thing dont have no gain!" oh how young and dumb i was. i probably could have gotten it for a steal too, who knows? as long as the DSL can get close to the boosted 800 tone, im good.

gonna search some more and try to find a deal...anyone know of any DSLs around for good prices? im going to keep an eye out, but i might have to be patient...

I'd be more interested in a Ceriatone Chupacabra or Yeti.

hmmm you know, i thought about the Laney's. i might have to get one of those. going searching now...see if i can find some good clips and maybe some used prices.

and yes, im trying to stay around the 5-600 mark. call me cheap, but i like finding good stuff for cheap. im a bargain hunter ;)

Ever play a Mesa MKIII. There is some crunchy dark lord gain in there.

The lead guitar player in my band has a 100-watter - my H&K Switchblade pummels it into submission nightly. My Mesa-powered rack rig makes it shake with fear. True story

I've had a DSL 100 for years and I have to say it's one of those workhorse, meat-and-potatos amps that covers so much ground you can use it for almost any style of music. Is it the dream-amp you've been searching for your whole life? Probably not, but for between $500 - $800, you absolutely cannot go wrong. The go relatively cheap because there are SO many of them out there. Marshall sold TONS of them - that has to say something. There have been nights it has just blown me away with how good it sounds. You can get a really nice Plexi-type tone running the Classic Gain channel just over the point of break-up, or rip it up with some searing leads with the Ultra Gain. Yes, there amps out there with more gain - but one of the nicest things about this amp is how great it works with pedals. Run it clean with your favorite drives, or dirty it up and throw a Tubescreamer or OCD and you WILL be smiling. The loop is not the greatest, but acceptable. The DSL is one of the most common backline amps because of it's tonal consistancy and realiability (mine has never failed me) and I believe even Paul Gilbert has started using them because they are so common and he's digging the sounds he's getting. Give one a try...I don't think you'll be disapointed.

I owned a DSL100 a while back and I really though it was a great sounding all around type amp. It wasn't the best at anything, but it did a lot of things well. Probably the best $500 I've spent on an amp.

DSL's are great amps, very versitile. But they do lack the Marshall "Punch" of the 800's and older amps. Good sounding all around Marshall tones, but mine has been gathering dust since I got my Chupacabra.

The only 2000 series amp that I think sounded pretty nice was the combo dsl 401 and had mine not broke i would have one still. My former bandmate had a tsl 100 that sounded nice considering what most sound like. Our rehearsal space has a back line of a 900 and a dsl 100 and I still lug my amp due to how bad the dsl sounds. Mediocre amps but they can be picked up cheap and give you a Marshall toned amp.

All i know is i run my DSL on the classic gain setting and keep the gain at about 1:00 and with my Suhr koko boost it can rip your face off especially with the right guitar/pickups

I used to have a DSL401 combo, okay amp, but I have always liked the DSL50 or DSL100 heads much more when I have demoed them. I still wish the DSL401 had been a DSL501 and used EL34 power tubes.

I am not a fan but they are great amps under $500. Its marshall's fat, chunky lil sister. I have seen trower kick ass with them but he has voodoo fingers.

Other cool amps you might dig that are in the same price range.
Peavy Classic 50 under 400
Laney VH100R under 500
VHT CLX under 700
Soldano HR50 with depth mod under 1k

Just saying there are lots of great amps out there worth investing in vs a marshall nameplate.
VHT CLX for under $700? I think you're talking about the CL50.

I love my DSL and it's been my #1 for 7 or 8 years now, but it's modded.

They do sound good but easily one of the most unreliable amps out there. The bias drift problems are a pain in the ass

I actually just checked back in here to mention that same thing to the OP. Before you buy one you need to double check the year it was made. I think anything after like 2002 or 2004 the problem was fixed so it shouldn't be an issue. I can't remember exactly which year it was fixed but I'm sure you could find it using google.

I've played a DSL401 & TSL601 - both sounded good. However, my guitar tech hates them for some reason compared to other amps.
